  • 2001 PT Cruiser Makeover....56k, go wax a car, a big car!

This is a 2001 PT Cruiser that was ordered within the first few days that the general public was allowed to order one when they were first introduced. The owner had to wait 6 months to take delivery! The owner is a friend of mine and a member of our online PT Cruiser club. This car sleeps outside so it gets some pretty nasty exposure to SoCal extreme heat, dust, etc. The finish was pretty nasty, with the roof being especially bad. Horrid, really. It took three passes with the clay bar to remove all the bonded contaminants. After the first pass the clay looked like it had been dropped in the sand!

What I noticed as the most glaring defects in the paint were the obvious swirls, lots and lots of small water spotting, and several scratches and scuff marks. A couple of the scratches were deep enough to catch a fingernail so they couldn't be completely removed, but their appearance was greatly reduced. Two passes of M80 with a polishing pad on the DA just wasn't getting the job done in some spots. I tried using my new rotary with M83 on a polishing pad and it seemed to do the trick, but I have very little experience with this tool and did not want to risk screwing up my friend's car, so I upped the aggressiveness to M83 on a Sonus Swirlbuster pad on the DA. This did a great job of taking out the swirls and water spotting, but left some noticeable hazing behind. These areas were then gone over again with M80 on the polishing pad. The owner's boyfriend helped me out on the whole car - he's been to a couple of Meguiar's Saturday Clinics, owns a G-100 and was eager to practice.

The car was washed at an automatic wash on Friday evening and brought to my place on Saturday morning. We QD'd her down to remove any loose dust, then went at it.

    Clay (3x in some areas!!)
    M83
    M80
    M21 x 2
    Hyper dressing on tires
M39 & M40 to clean the rear bumper step guard & other exterior trim

Here's the swirls and water spotting. The whole car looked like this, or worse.

Bad scratches and scuffs in several places.

This is from just a 1' x 2' section on the roof. Just disgusting!!!

This was after three passes on the roof, but we finally got things cleaned up. The rest of the car wasn't nearly as bad.

These were the chemicals used to get the job done.

With this much Meguiar's product on hand, you need an extremely vicious guard dog to watch over it!!

Here's the hood after taping off a section and then polishing out the mess.

Close up of front fender, all finished up!

    Rear hatch, swirl free!!

Rear hatch, up close in direct sun. Niiiice!!!

    Reflection in the hood.

Finished car (with mine next to it!)

Even though she watched the entire transformation and played the role of assistant to her boyfriend and me, the owner was still stunned when she saw the finished car in the sun. I love that!

        wow. Excellent job mike!

How long did this whole detail took?
How many passes with #83,the sonus pad and the DA to produce that swirl free result?

          Thanks for the kind words!

We didn't get started until around 11:30AM Saturday; it took roughly an hour and a half to clay the car, but that was three people working on it so figure 4.5 man hours. With the 83 & Sonus pad I spent almost 4 hours knocking out the swirls, but as this combo left very noticeable hazing it had to be followed by the owner's boyfriend with 80. It only took a single, though long, pass with the 83 and another single, though relatively quick, pass with 80 to correct what was left behind. Figure about 7 man hours to correct the defects then.

The temperature was in the high 60s today and I found I could work 83 much, much longer than I can in the summer when the temps are in the 90s and humidity is around 20%. This definitely helped.

A single coat of 21 is what, less than 10 minutes to apply, 20 minutes to dry, 5 minutes to remove when using a PC? Have a friend or two follow with MF towels to hit the tighter spots and you've got close to 45 minutes for the whole thing. Of course we did the trim work while the wax was drying, and since we did two coats we had plenty of time to cover everything. Still, that's another man hour of work each time. We parked the car in my garage overnight and waxed, trim detailed on Sunday.

All in all, I guess it was somewhere around 14~15 man hours to complete the paint and exterior trim. I'm really glad I had two people helping me!!!

Well, you have to consider a couple of things here: I am not a pro by any stretch of the imagination so, although I can do a pretty decent job of knocking down defects, I just can't do it as quickly as the really experienced guys can, plus I was helping/teaching my friend how to use his PC for the first time.

I know the rotary would have made much shorter work of this, and that guys like Mike Phillips, Richard Lin (OctaneGuy) or Joe Fernandez (Superior Shine) could have achieved my results in half the time, maybe less. In the long run, they would have produced even better results than I did, I'm sure. I'm pretty confident in my abilities, but I also know my limitations, and I've got a lot to learn still!!

Like removing or covering your ring! Just giving you a hard time.
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.
