How do you keep from the picture getting all gritty and distorted when you shrink it down to fit the size of an avatar?

We post a lot of picture to the web, and it's important to us that the photos we post are not distorted as it defeats the purpose of sharing the photo. Did a lot of research, trial and error and found a free software program that makes awesome Avatars without distorting the image at all.
Must have image tool for the tool chest
Also, you don't have to use it to make small pictures like Avatars, we use it to resize mega picture to 600 and 700 pixels wide for use in threads with no distortion. As long as you make the setting adjustments shown in the above linked tutorial, it's 'Bubba-Proof'.Comment

I don't have Photoshop at work, but I'll fix it up better for you tonight when I get home. I just got Photoshop CS3 last night so I'm itching to try it out. For now you can use this one...

Here it is with some of the extra space cropped out of the back of the truck, (fluff), and resized to 150 pixels wide.
