  • 2 week old paint buff?

    Hi y'all,
A while ago I detailed a car that had a 5 day old paint job (I didn't know it was that new). When I was drying it off, I noticed some fine scratches appearing. I stopped drying it immediately, but the damage was already done. Fortunately it was a friend so they aren't mad (since it wasn't really my fault since I didn't know the paint job was that fresh). Anyways, I finished up the rest of the car (only the hood, the driver side quarter panel, and the driver side rear quarter were repainted) and told the friend I would buff the scratches out once the paint dried. The scratches are only on the hood and only on a 6 inch by 18 inch area (not totally covering it, just that's the area they are in). All that to say, the paint job is now two weeks old and someone is coming to buy the car today. He would like me to buff it out now if I can. Do y'all know if two weeks is enough time for the paint to harden enough for me to buff it? I realize that is somewhat of a subjective question, but I'd hate to mess it up more. If y'all think it is too early to buff it out, I will just tell the guy that buys it I will buff it out for free after a few weeks. Also, if it's not too early to buff it, I still shouldn't put wax on since it needs to out-gas, right? Or is that just a myth? Thanks so much in advance!

I would say you are fine to use something like #80 on the finish. But it may still be to early to wax.
You left out licking the water off. Oh, wait a minute, that's my cat, not my car. Uh, I mean my cat licks himself dry. I don't lick my cat dry. Or my car. -PC.

The paint most likely scratched so easily for you the first time around just because it was so new and still soft. Keep in mind that even fresh paint is normally buffed out to bring up the shine, so you should be just fine using M80 on a polishing pad to get rid of those scratches (as Shawn just suggested). In fact, I would expect the scratches to come out fairly easily. Just take your time and go easier than you normally would, at least to start.

I would still avoid waxing at this point, but if you have a pure polish like #7 you could apply that just to add a little extra depth or gloss to the look.

Lol I was thinking that too. I didn't even get a chance to buff it though. It was raining and, even though it was under a carport, the water was getting on it because it was windy. Also I would have had to run an extension cord (probably two) through puddles. I figured that wouldn't be the best idea. It wasn't that bad looking anyways.
