Autocross numbers? magnetic? tape?

Some autocross groups allow you you to put numbers on your windows, but some say they have to be on paint. What's the best way to do this without risking damaging the finish? I am guessing some type of tape that isn't very sticky (like the blue tape we use before waxing.) What about magnetic numbers? I've heard it recommended to put on wax, let it dry without wiping off and put the magnetic number on top of that.

Any advice?

Funny story...

I had a friend who worked at Waldbaums....in the produce section. So he collected a TON of those magnetic numbers and brand names over the years, the ones they use to label fruit and veggies. He always had them in his car too...so one day, I walked out to my old car in the high school parking lot way back when...and my car was completly covered, roof to skirts, in magnetic supermarket numbers. It was seriously, like 55 pounds of magnetic numbers...completly ridiculous.

Anyway, I washed the car before I sold it, and didn't see any noticible damage from them. If they did, it would probably be nothing a little ScratchX couldn't ge out.

I'd make sure they went on a clean, freshly washed & waxed finish, and maybe give the magnets a good cleaning too. I've never heard of waxing and not hazing before the numbers go on, so can't give you advice there.

For autocrossing though, I've seen a lot of guys use blue painters tape to mask on the numbers; haven't seen people use the magnets yet.

Make sure your car is clean before track day, then when you get to the event just give the panel a shot of quick detail spray, wipe clean with a microfiber. Make sure the magnetic side of the decal is clean and slap it on. It won't be on for more than several hours, most of which will be spent on a parked car. I wouldn't worry about it all.

Once the magnet numbers are on they shouldn't move. I would think that trying to slide them around/repositioning the numbers would cause scratching.

You might try to fit a thin layer of felt under the numbers, that won't scratch and stays secure, but it has to be thin!

Check with your track or event organizers to see if the numbers have to be on the paint. When we rent out a venue, typically we're allowed to use > 6" vinyl numbers or paint-stick numbers on the windows. No paint concerns that way.

I have seen people use painters tape if that works better for you.
