1999 Miata - Severe Oxidation Removal

I picked up a 99 miata for a great price....but I looked at it in the dark and didnt see how bad it was. Overall it was just in rough shape, with oxidation and blemishes in the paint everywhere, and severe oxidation specifically on the passenger side. The owner must have parked it in the same spot every day for 6 years.

    before pics (all freshly washed)
the worst. chalky, pink, and nasty

    this pic actually looks decent.

    process:
first off, this is my first time doing a full detailing process on the exterior. In the past I usually have just done a coat of gold class wax by hand. Since this time the car is in need of some serious help, I borrowed a friends DA buffer and meguiars supplies, and went to work.

started off with a carwash using the professional line shampoo (i use gold class shampoo too), did a light misting with simple green while the car was wet, wiped with a towel then washed off.
then claybarred the car with the meguiars kit. I like the meguiars kit over the others because it comes with 2 bars and a microfiber towel.
Ive never claybarred before and never thought it was worth it (clay kits arent cheap). I was impressed with the results however, even on the oxidized portions the pain t had been made completely smooth, and afterwards water beaded up on the surface as if there was fresh wax on it. Very cool, im a convert.

Fire up the buffer. I started off on the worst part of the car with the pro line medium cutting compound. The rest of the car I used #83 DA Cleaner/Polish. Followed up with #82 swirl free polish.
Here is a in-progress shot. This is after #82 on the rear quarter (no glaze or sealant) but the door hasnt been touched

finished up with show car glaze and a misting with final inspection. I didnt use a sealant because I didnt think I needed to, but I picked up some NXT so Im going to use that next time.

    final results

    I couldnt be happier

this was my first time doing this, and Im sure there are a lot of things I could do better, but afterwards I went out and immediately bought my own DA buffer and the meguiars pro products, Im sold.

Great job! Looks like a new car. If the owner knew the car could look like that you might not have gotten such a deal.

    Welcome to the addiction!

          Looks great..

You'll certainly want a wax or sealant in order to seal in those results though. Polish will just wash off in the rain otherwise.

Excellent Job.... even though Miata's can get nasty, they clean up nicely. (I also did an extremely oxidized red miata ) Red miata's look great when all shined up

Fantastic job. Have a little fun and take it back to the old owner and show off ! ! !

Now protect all that work you did and seal that shine in.

Great job. Reminds me of what my miata looked like as well when I acquired it. I have the same black hardtop red car combo. Looks great.

I would hit that beautiful red paint with #26 in a heart beat.

Single stage paints are easy to work on and easy to create dramatic before and after results, this is why they are also more fun to work on.

Clear coat paints tend to be harder and this mean more difficult for you and I to work defects out of. Couple this with the fact that clear coats magnify and make seeing swirls and scratches to our eyes a lot easier and it just takes all the fun out of working on your car.

Most people when they learn about the differences, and have worked on both clear coat paints and single stage paints will appreciate a clear coat finish because of it's durability and longevity, but when it comes to working on a car... singe stage paint any day...

Probably the thing people like least about a single stage paint is how the pigment transfers onto your pad and towels, no big deal really just clean and use again, the pigment won't dye the next car you work on the color from the previous car.

                            FWIW

Great transformation! I've got a '99 Miata in Emerald Mica but it's a clear coat finish. I like the black hard top with the red, too. How many miles does she have on her?

Others have mentioned the need to wax or seal the paint. You really want to do this since you just spent many hours correcting what was neglected paint, but in the end you gave the new finish no protection!!!
