  • Newbie needs help selecting products and process for detail on brand new Black car

    Hello,

I just found this forum today, and I was wanting to get some advice/input/help from the experienced community.

I just got a brand new 2007 Nighthawk Black Pearl Honda Accord. This is my first new car in ages, and my first ever black car.

I have been searching the internet like crazy over the past two weeks trying to figure out the very best products to purchase and use on my new Accord to really give my Black paint the best wet looking POP as well as protection.

Here is what I have purchased so far and what I was planning on doing:

    Klasse AIO
    Klasse High Gloss Sealant
    P21S Carnuba Wax
    Pinnacle Crystal Mist QD

Since this is a brand new car, I planned on giving it a very good wash. After that I was going to apply the Klasse AIO as instructed, and then immediately follow up with a coat of the Klasse High Gloss Sealant. I would give it about 24 hours to cure, and then was planning on topping it off with the P21S, and then would use the Pinnacle Crystal Mist QD after every car wash to finish it off going forward until I decided to re-wax and start over again.

I wanted to get everyone's feelings on the products and process I currently have, and what you would change in the products I selected as well as the process to get the very best wet POP look for my black car.

At this point, I don't want to get into purchasing and using a PC as I'm not ready to tackle trying to figure out all of the accessories to get with one not to mention actually learning to use it.

Price is not an option regarding the products, and I will put as much time as it takes regarding the process, but everything will have to be "by hand" for now.

I look forward to everyone's opinions and advice. Thanks!!!

Edit- For example, I have been reading some really good things on Meguire's NXT sealant, especially how it looks on Black cars. Would that be a better choice than the Klasse High Gloss Sealant?

Let me get a couple of things out of the way here first:
    1. You're going to get a lot of comments about using Meguiar's products - after all, this is a company run site
    2. You will, sooner or later, want a PC and you will fall in love with it. I promise!!

Having said that, you've bought the products you've bought and an awful lot of people swear by them. I think (I hope!) most people would agree with me when I say at least you've purchased some decent products and plan on using them to keep your new car looking good for a long time to come. Good for you.

I would strongly urge you to pick up a clay bar kit and use it immediately following the wash, before doing anything else. Even new cars have bonded contaminants that are best removed by a clay bar. Doing so, and following with a good paint cleaner, will prepare the surface properly for your wax and/or sealant and impart a higher level of shine and reflectance.

Just follow the instructions for each of the products you've chosen, make sure the car is in the shade and the surface is cool, and take your time.

Mike, thanks a lot for the reply, and I am certainly aware of this being a Meguiar's forum

I edited my first post. One of the reasons why I posted here is because all of the threads I have seen regarding the NXT sealant, and how it does a great job on Black cars and really gives that wet look and POP.

I was curious about what others thought of me swapping out the Klasse High Gloss Sealant with the NXT?

Also, can you buy claying kits at local auto stores, or do you have to order online only?

it's all personal preference (i would rather go with these choices than klasse). nxt, #21 or #26, ALL look great!

Mike, thanks a lot for the advice.

I had a few other questions.

The Meguiars NXT. How easy is it to apply and remove by hand? Also, does it stain plastic/rubber on contact when applying?

Lastly, I live in Texas, and we are fast approaching the summer. Nothing gets me angrier than spending a great deal of time soaping and cleaning off my car, only to spray it off and have it dry on me before I can completely wipe it down and have water spots everywhere.

Is there a specificlly recommended car washing soap that drys off clean and prevents spotting? Thanks!

very easy, imo. make sure to work the wax into a light thin coat (wait at least 10-15 minutes before removal, make sure to do the swipe test), and removal will be a breeze...

the key to drying to prevent water spotting is to use just the hose on the final rinse and sheet off as much water as possible before drying...

I agree with imacarnut's points above.

I'm a huge fan of M21, which many people consider to be the "professional" version of NXT. I like to apply it in very thin coats and let it sit for a few hours before I remove it. You can do the same with NXT and either of them will still be a breeze to remove.

As for washing and drying in the heat - try doing that on a summer day here in SoCal. We'll be just as hot as you are in Texas but where you've got 99% humidity we'll be looking at 10% or less at times. Water evaporates in the blink of an eye. This is where the sheeting method imacarnut comes in handy, along with having a well waxed finish at all times. We have crazy hard water and I find that even with that I can get rid of fresh water spots with a quick detail spray.

One other comment about Meguiar's products in general: you'll soon discover that bang for the buck there's nothing else out there that can hold a candle to Meguiar's. I tried all manner of products before becoming a Meguiar's fanatic and I got great results. I thought Zaino was the greatest stuff I'd ever tried, and there's no doubt that it is a fine product. But now that I've got a better understanding about what's really going on with regard to paint polishing and maintenance, I don't see the need to spend all the extra money for a lesser result.

Thanks a lot for the response.

I would be real interested in the "professional" version of the NXT wax/sealant.

I do have a question though. I get so confused when people throw around that I like #21 followed by #69, etc. How in the heck do I decipher what is what, and once I do, where to buy it? Thanks!

Check the link at the top of this subforum called "Meguiars online acronyms and product links"- it lists Meguiars products by number, and clicking on any link will take you to that product.

I did what? (that list is geared to PC use of course)

As far as where to buy, you can look for PBE shops in your area using the dealer locator (call before you go), or my preference, order from autodetilingsolutions.com. Even with shipping, you will usualy come out ahead.
