Anyone know if the 1979 Corvette (red) has a single stage paint or something else?

If it's factory it should be single stage.

To date, the oldest factory clearcoated Vette we've worked on was a 1981

Just do a simple test using a little paint cleaner and a clean cloth, rub the paint cleaner onto the paint and then turn the cloth over and see if you're pulling color.

Its a friends car and he lives about 2 1/2hr away from me. I think its the factory paint still. He's restoring it and racing it. He's ripping out the whole interior this winter and putting in a new one. I volunteered to do the exterior when he is ready...for pay of course

Quick follow up. The Vette has clear on it because it used to be silver..now its red.

Your general process would be the same either way really, just a matter of if your pads would have turned red or not.

The owner says the hood has a lot of spiderwebbing on it.

Having owned/detailed many Vettes, some repaints, check those spyder webs closely because it could be paint allegations not "webbing" of the clear coat.

Not to sound too dense...but what are paint allegations?

Paint allegations are pretty common on older repainted Vettes but not exculsively limited to Vettes. The repaint sometimes is put on too thick & not fully dried, therefore the solvents slowly evaporate causing a "shrinkage" of the paint producing very fine cracks/lines in the color coat. Sometimes they look like swirls in the clear but upon close evaluation it's the color coat.

He is currently planning on repainting it. So even if it doesn't look like new when I am done, at least it will buy him some more time. It's hard for me to tell without seeing it, so I'm trying to pass on the info I get. So at least I'll be prepared somewhat.

When was it repainted? If it was repainted years ago, it could still be SS paint. A '69 Camaro I did had been repainted in the late '80s, but it was a SS paint job. Just wanted to throw that out there.
