    Air vs. Electric polisher

    Well, I have been on the fence. When it was announced on the forums last year, I was ready to go for a G110. Now I am again undecided and need help.

    I have read in the archives the reason for using a PC due to cost portability. I will not be doing this for money but will have a compressor. Can you help me choose between a G110 and an air tool? What recommendations for the air tool for a newbie? I have no idea about the quality and availability of tools to run using a compressor.

    What's the capacity of the compressor you'll be using? Can you run a piece of equipment non stop for a few minutes at a time with very short off cycles between loads? From what I've seen most smaller home compressors won't cut it for this application.

    I had the opportunity to use a new G110 last week for several hours and I love it! Sort of wish my Porter Cable 7424 would break so I'd a reason to buy one!

      I agree with Mike. Unless you have a compressor with a high CFM and a large storage tank, you will hate using the air DA.

      Though I am not able to comment on it, I used the G110 after the SEMA show. In fact, I think mine was the one on display. In a week or two, I will be able to post more info once I have been given the OK from management.

        Good question. Most newbies worry about the cost of a G100. I haven’t come across one looking to spend the big bucks on air tools and the honkin’ compressor it takes to run them.

        Anyway, whether for newbie or old pro I’d still recommend the same commercial quality tools form companies like Dynabrade, National Detroit and Hutchins.

        But really, unless you know you specifically want pneumatics, you'll probably be happiest with electrics.

          Just curious, what size compressor does it take to efficiently run an air polisher? How about the PSI?

          I've considered to getting a DA sander (Mirka or Dynabrade) to use along with my 20 gal compressor for a project.

            I would also think that the noise of the air da would be too loud for prolonged use without having to use hearing protection. I know I don't like using my air impact gun even for short bursts while rotating tires.

              It depends on the DA you are planning to use. The Dynabrade with the 3/16" orbit requires 14 SCFM at 90 PSI. Now that does not mean you can not use it in small bursts, with a smaller air compressor. But that depends on how small of compressor you have.

              I have a 5.5 HP, Dual Stage with cast iron head and a belt drive. It puts out 5.8 SCFM at 90 psi with a 30 gallon tank and I find it inadequate for many air tools.

                  An impact wrench is especially loud because it’s not just spinning, it’s hammering. An air DA doesn’t seem louder than en electric (not that I’ve measured it) but the sound is more of a hiss than a buzz. I tend to wear ear plugs with either air or electric.

                    Sorry. When I mentioned cost, I meant the cost of a compressor and its associated tools. From what I read on the forums, that is why the PC/G110 is recommended. You just have the cost of the tool.

                    As far as the specs on the compressor, I am not sure. I will check into it. If I can recall, I is only a 26 or 30 gallon. I am not sure of PSI but I thought the most important measure was the CFM as mentioned above.

                    So, I may still end up with a G110. I will have to get the specs. I just wanted to take advantage of the compressor if I had it. I already figured out the obvious that I would be stuck detailing the family's vehciles at my house or lugging the compressor around. The G110 wins hands down to that respect.

                    Again thanks for everyone's replies so far. I was also wanting to take everything into consideration before making a decision. Yet another lesson learned from the forums. I coin acronyms all the time at work. Maybe this needs to become one. A "YALL" - Yet another lesson learned....
