1901 - Meguiar's Goes Into Business
Meguiar's humble beginning took place in 1901, when Frank Meguiar Jr. started the Mirror Bright Polish Company. The first products Frank Meguiar Jr. manufactured were Furniture Cleaners and Polishes. When cars first began to become popular, some of these early furniture products were used on the first automobile bodies because they were usually were made of wood.
Frank Meguiar Jr. did this in the family garage, which doubled as both a laboratory and a manufacturing plant. With help from his children, he would make one bottle of polish at a time using a simple eggbeater and some old fashioned elbow grease.
Pictured to the left is the first product introduced to the market, it was a safe finish cleaner for removing stains and scratches out of furniture and other woodwork, typically coated or finished with shellac, lacquer and varnish coatings.
This first product utilized diminishing abrasives to clean the surface and restore clarity without instilling scratches at the same time. After the finish was cleaned using this product, the finish would then be rubbed down with Meguiar's Furniture Polish which we'll take a look at in the next newsletter.
