  • Foam Applicator or Even Coat Applicator

    Me again guys,

I have six foam pads and four even coat applicators. The DA polisher is not available in Jamaica and I won't be travelling to the US until thanksgiving so I'll have to apply all my products by hand. Which applicator goes best with which of the following products.

    1. DC polish
    2. Scratch x
    3. NXT wax
    4. Interior Protectant
    5. Spray wax
    6. NXT Metal polish

    Thanks in advance.

Sorry, forgot to point out that the NXT wax is the liquid version.

I'd still use the foam pad for a liquid wax.

For the cleaning step, in most cases you would use a foam or microfiber applicator unless you needed more abrading power, in that case you could use terry cloth, either a cotton terry cloth applicator pad available at most auto parts stores, Detailers Choice is a good brand, you could also just cut up a quality 100% cotton terry cloth towel into pieces approximately 4-6 inches square, and then fold one of these pieces in have and use it like an applicator pad.

Problem with using terry cloth for extra abrading power is that it can leave some light scratching in the paint after removing whatever defect it was you were trying to remove, so if this does happen then you need to re-clean the area using the same chemical but switching back to the foam or microfiber for your application material.

Foam or Microfiber - With a pure polish like DCP you're not trying to remove defects, merely work the product into and over the surface, so a gentle application material is preferred.

If you're working on a surface in good condition so all you're trying to do is apply a product to condition and protect then foam works really well for this. If you're trying to agitate and loosen and remove ground in dirt or stains out of leather or vinyl or even something like a seat belt fabric, then cotton terry cloth work pretty well because the NAP, that is the small cotton loops of fiber help act to scrub the surface and work the cleaners against and into the surface for good cleaning action.

A simple bathroom cotton wash cloth works well for cleaning neglected surfaces, dampen the cloth with your product and if you are trying to clean stains or ground in dirt and grim then use your product heavy so the surface is wet with product because it's the ample wetness that is going to insure enough cleaners are getting into the dirt to loosen and remove it. (you don't want to work dry or with a minimal amount of product as there won't be enough cleaners to penetrate into the dirt and grime)

Think about washing dirty grimy hands, would you use a little soap and a little water or would you use a lot of soap and flush with a lot of water?

What works best is a microfiber polishing cloth folded in at least 4 ways to create a cloth that fits your outstretched fingers and hand. Then dampen one side of this cloth so it is wet with the spray wax and then use this dampened cloth to apply and spread out the spray wax. You can also use foam and microfiber applicator pads.

Foam for fines surfaces for regular maintenance, a piece of terry cloth for more cleaning action on neglected surfaces where you need more cleaning power.

              Hope this helps...

Yep, thanks alot. Just one more question. The only meguiar's applicators available in Jamaica are the foam and even coat ( both have Gold Class labeling), is the even coat the one your refering to when you say microfibre?

Yes, the Even Coat is microfiber, but for interior things, a regular MF cloth is good.

So kind of both I guess...

So it's okay to apply scratch-x using microfiber? It wont do any harm than using a foam applicator?
