    Re: Open Class - June 28th, 2008 - Pictures & Comments

After Pizza we viewed some of the paint on member's cars, a number had easily visible rotary buffer swirls also called holograms or buffer trails.

We chose a couple of cars in need of claying so everyone could learn the correct technique for moving the clay over the paint with Quik Detailer.

      The real fun begins...

Putting a little passion behind the pad...

Showing how to use a swirl finder light to highlight defects and then showing
how to check your before and after results...

Demonstrating the correct technique for removing swirls with the G110

Then showing others how easy it is to do themselves...

Always place the cord over your shoulder so you don't drag it against the finish...

      Hands-on Training...

Cleaning the pad on the fly...

      Next up....

      Buffing like a seasoned Pro!

We used the G110 on the 3.0 Speed Setting with
a W-9006 Finishing Pad to apply NXT 2.0

Then we inspected the before and after results for all sections using
        the Swirl Finder Light

And then out in the sun...

          Re: Open Class - June 28th, 2008 - Pictures & Comments

The Hot Rod 1948 Lincoln had a custom lacquer paint job that includes a lacquer clear top coat, so while it does have a clear coat paint system it's an old school type clear coat system, not a modern basecoat/clearcoat paint system and as such the paint is very soft and easy to polish out.

The finish had a mottled look with a lot of swirls and this made the paint look hazy and difficult to see the beautiful Candy Brandywine color as well as the metallic flake in the paint.

We clayed the area first and the car appears to have some bonded contaminants which will need to be removed using detailing clay.

We showed the owner how to use the G110 with a W-8006 Polishing pad on the 5.0 Speed Setting with some M80 Speed Glaze to remove the swirls and restore clarity to the clear layer of paint.

These results were achieved with just a very few passes of the M80 over the paint. More time invested will result in even better results.

This is a very rare car as well as a very unique car...

          Time to cruise home!

Thanks for a great class Mike. Using the clay on my Mustang was an eye opener and made me realize what I really need to get done because of the shape my paint is in. I'm gonna order my products soon and get to work! Thanks again

Just curious, but are there any classes north of the border in Canada?
