  • ?'s Re M105 by hand

When using M105 by hand do you use the same technique as ScratchX--work in until clear then wipe off? Which applicator is recommended--Terry, Foam or MF? After using 105 by hand will the finish need another polishing step?

    Thanks!!

    Good questions...

M105 doesn't have the same consistency that ScratchX has, it's not as wet a product. You don't have to work it as hard or use as many applications to get the job done.

Not sure about the working the product clear technique for either product. That used to work with ScratchX before it was reformulated to be used by machine, kind of went away after being reformulated.

Basically you work the product for about 45 seconds and then inspect your results. If the defect is gone then continue around the car remembering how long you worked the product to get good results previously and just keep duplicating that.

As for finish results I can only speak for what I've seen and that is on most paints it finishes out really nice, in some cases you might need to do a second cleaning or polishing step to maximize clarity and gloss, just depends upon the paint.

Of course after that then apply a coat of wax or a paint sealant.

Great product. It is now the benchmark for all competitors to try to catch-up to.

      Morning,

I use a Meg's Microfiber Applicator when using M105 by hand (for under door handles or tight spots where a rotary will not go).

Work it with passion like you would with ScratchX but not as long, until it is a very light residue and then wipe off. The results will amaze you!

        Yes, work in the same.

Terry would be the more agressive applicator if you needed more bite, foam and MF being more gentle. Some folks would do a first application or two with terry, then follow up with foam.

As fas as needing another cleaning step to remove any marring... maybe, who knows. Have to do a test spot and see, though it sure seems like it leaves a darn good finish. You certainly could follow up with a pure polish and wax of course.

          Hey Murr,

          Have you used M105 yet?

With Terry cloth, I find that the M105 can leave a slight haze. Whereas with MF, the finish is almost perfect, even after removing deep marring.

Only needed ScratchX so far, but it certainly sounds like the haze you got from terry is similar to ScratchX. Definately needs followed up with foam if terry was used first.

              Thanks for the advice Murr!

But no, it is from the type of abrasives in M105 and the way they need to be worked! ScratchX is not even close. Luckily after all of these years, I have gained a little knowledge.

Wish I had more inside info to the science behind the abrasives.... it would be fascinating...

But have you actually used M105???

Obviously Meguiar's will not share proprietary information. But having detailed all these years and having used all kinds of different products and brands, M105 has made it to a very short list of my personal favorites. I would not have several gallons of it if I did not like it and used it regularly. Having actually used it would make a big difference in how a comparison could or could not be made to ScratchX.

So Tim, should I use foam, terry or MF for hand application of 105?

I have had the best luck with MF applicators when using M105 by hand.

Here is a pic of an area I did with #105 by hand. I can't fit either my rotary or the DA under the rear wing so I rubbed it by hand! I followed that with #80, #7, and finally two coats or #21. Just like the rest of the car:

I would have liked to take some direct sun shots but any defects just wash out in direct light given the white paint. All minor swirls where removed and deeper scratches where greatly reduced. I'm planning on doing a little write-up with a darker colored car and #105 by hand soon though!
