  • Detailing with stripes on the car how to mask them?

I have my new Mach 1 and it has stripes on it. there is one fat stripe then one seperate stripe around the fat stripe. How would I tape them off? what kind of tape would I use. I am doing this car by hand because my last DA pad was used up on my friends SS Nissan Z.
    My steps are

    1) I washed the car today so I will UQD it first
    2) Clay it
    3) Tape it off
    4) DC1 I would use #83 but I have no more pads.
    5) #7
    6) NXT 2 coats

Are they painted on stripes, stick on stripes or matte stripes...

Matte stripes, I have no clue what to do with.

Painted on stripes; don't even worry about them.

Stick-on stripes; since your doing it by hand they shouldn't cause you any problems and you can go on as normal.

They are stick on stripes. with a flat finish. You can definately feel the stripe as you go from the paint to the stripe when you touch it. Should i just use some blue painters tape?

Yea in that case just use blue painters tape and either go a little bit over the edge of the stripe or right on the edge of the stripe. As I said earlier, if you doing it by hand, I wouldn't worry that much at all. Your hand isn't spinning as fast as a rotary or DA and there is a very slim chance you will peel them off working by hand.

But on the side of caution, use painters tape.

Gently apply the tape over them. Moreso, apply pressure on the edge of the tape that will be on the paint and then just gently lay the tape over the stripes. This should help the tape remove very easily from the stripes and you shouldn't have to worry about peeling.

Thanks guys for the help. I will be detailing the car after work. I am going to spend most of the rest of my day after work to detail the car. I wish I had a new pad that would be nice but oh well I detailed my 97 by hand I am sure I can do this by hand. I will be posting pics later.

If you have the money to buy a new pad, there's a paint supply store on the end of Sunrise (I think it's something like Sunrise Auto and Paint), that has the pads.

I have an 03 Mach 1. I just wax the hood and side stripes by hand, avoiding the edges, so I don't build up wax under the edge. The rest of the car is done with my pc. BTW...I use NXT on the Mach 1.

Thanks guys. I am not feeling good today kind of sick so I may have to wait to detail it. I am mad that I feel like junk.

You may want to consider two widths of blue painters tape.

Narrower like 1/2" for following stripe contour easier then a second overlapping tape like 1" or 1-1/2"

Blue tape will have less grip but enough for polishing and waxing

beware you can get some "white" edge buildup on the edges--do them by hand and apply a mist of detailer spray.

Thanks for that info. When the car was previously detailed they did not tape it off and got a lot of wax buid up on the stripes but I am going to use some QD to get it off.I am going to my paint store to get two new w8006 pads maybe they have the 2.0V.
                            Thanks for the help guys
