Pictures & Comments from Thursday "Open Garage" - October 2nd, 2008

Scott, a local long time Surfer brought his all original 1965 Datsun truck with the original paint to Meguiar's Garage for some careful polishing work.

    New Washable Pads

    Mike,

First, thanks for the "Open Garage" (and pizza) last night. After trying the 110 on my BMW I plan on buying one. But, I thought I would wait till the washable pads are available on-line. Do you know when that will be? Also, any chance of the Batmobile coming back?

Casey brought down this 1995 Ford Escort Wagon that sat outside exposed to the SoCal Sun up-protected in non-running condition for over 2 years. Casey fixed all the mechanicals to put the car back on the road and then brought the Escort to our Thursday Night "Open Garage" to see if there was anything that could be done to bring the paint back to life.

There are tiny cracks everywhere in the hood that no company's products will fix, but we have a term we use on the forum that embodies the idea of doing the best with what you have, we call it taking your car's finish to it's maximum potential.

In this example it means while we know we can't fix the cracks in the paint, we can at least restore a clear, glossy finish to the paint that's left so the car will visually look better.

      Here's some before shots...

This top section was done by hand using M80 Speed Glaze with a small piece of terry cloth toweling.

This lower test spot was done using M80 Speed Glaze with our new W7207 Foam Cutting Pad

Casey goes to town using the G110

This is a thin coating of NXT Tech Wax 2.0

Casey using a Supreme Shine Microfiber to wipe off the dried wax.

        After shots...

Casey's going watch the results over the next 2 weeks and see how the paint holds up and if after 2 weeks the side he polished out is still looking good he'll bring it back and we'll do the other side of the hood, then Casey will take over and do the entire car using the products and process we dialed-in for him at Meguiar's Garage.

Take your car's paint to it's maximum potential

Thanks for coming to Meguiar's and checking out our Thursday Night "Open Garage"

I've been told the new washable foam pads will be available for ordering in November, probably the week after SEMA/NACE

Of course, it will be announced on the forum when they are available.

Might have the Batmobile back next year or another celebrity car, again we always post Show Car Makeover's on the homepage of the forum weeks before the event is scheduled.

            I dig that Datsun pickup!
Has an Australian Ute sort of look to it.

I had a 1970 Datsun pickup as my first ride.
It was very utilitarian, but it was cool.

Got broad sided in it- A HUGE (in comparison to my truck) Olds Delta 88 smacked me in the passenger side. Really nailed it.
I was able to drive it home, rear-wheel wobbling about. The force was so intense that I ripped the shift knob clean off, threads and all.

The transmission generally would grind the first to second gear shift.
The only benefit to having the truck basically destroyed was the gringing disappeared!

That is, until one day I was driving it and the tranny wouldn't come out of fourth gear. I was near State College and the 57 in Anaheim, and I had to drive that thing to Valley View at the 405... What a hoot.

Pew- That burnt clutch smell is something I can live without.

After 1 day the cracks in the paint have turned white and are visible at 20 feet. I assume this is the compound we used and the wax built up and turned white. Not sure why it looks so different from last night....Maybe the oils you mentioned are all dried up????

Thanks for all the help Mike. I will be back for another class for sure, and most likely have my wife stop by to see whats possible with her car too.

You may want to run a small edit, its a 1999

If you would like I'll put up some pics.

The King Ranch is so big we could only get part of it into the garage to work on the leather...

Not only had the paint oxidized and dulled and hazed over but so did the plastic headlights...

Hey Mike, I just wanted to report that the leather treatment was

The cleaner/conditioner spray was very easy to use, I was surprised at how simple it was. I guess I'm just used to the extensive process of detailing paint

It was difficult to notice at night but it was really obvious the next day that the cleaner/conditioner did its job. The leather really popped and the dryness was gone, it also smells good

I'll definitely be buying a bottle so I can do the seats on my Accord, they haven't received any love in 3 years

                    Thanks again Mike!
