MGH-5 New Car Glaze

#5 New Car Glaze is one of Meguiar's early pure polishes that's still very popular today with both Professionals and Enthusiasts. It's a pure polish and in Meguiar's terminology this means it's a non-abrasive polish. It's a cousin to #7 Show Car Glaze only whereas #7 is very oily and it doesn't really dry, #5 is formulated to dry and to dry very quickly for use in humid environments and for people that prefer this characteristic over the wetness of #7. It's also a "Paintable" product which means it's safe for use on fresh paint and in a fresh paint environment. (Body Shops)

Here's a collection of different bottles of #5 over the last 50+ years. Note the name on the Glass Bottle is Mirror Glaze, this means this product was made after World War II (If the label said Mirror Bright that would imply pure-World War II)

What's interesting is the transition from glass bottles to plastic bottles.

You see, Meguiar's was around before plastic was invented, so we had to put our products in glass bottles and tin cans. After plastic was invented and the technology evolved to the point they could make a plastic bottle ready for real-world use, we transitioned over just like most companies making any kind of product.

Being around for a long time does not automatically makes your products great. Making great products for a long time does however earns you generational trust.

What's a Turkish Towel? I read it on a couple of the bottles.

It's a terry cloth towel, a cotton towel with a plush nap.

The nap is the little cotton loops you see n most quality bath towels.

The nap can help you by acting as a form of a mild abrasive to give your choice of product more bite when removing defects or it can help you to remove product residue by slicing into the residue and thus loosening it and enabling you to remove it.

How the towel works, that is how it provides bite or slice depends upon your skill and how you use it.

My guess would be,

First bottle: 1950's
Second bottle: 1960's
Last bottle: 1970's

Last bottle is current bottle and label.

M03 Machine Glaze is a very wet polish for machine application, specifically for the rotary buffer. It has a long buffing cycle or as some would say it offers a long play time. Even though it's specifically formulated to work well with a rotary buffer it can still be applied by hand and is in fact a very popular pure polish for hand polishing.

You can also apply M03 as well as M05 with a DA Polisher or Traditional Orbital Buffer.

At one point the H referred to Hand and the M referred to Machine

Even though you could apply the machine products by hand also.

Thanks for the pictures, Mike - what a fantastic heritage! It's also nice to see the history of the hand and machine designations for the products. Of course some of these products pre-date mass use of electricity; certainly common use of machine buffers.
