  • Clear coat peeling off

I have a 98 Honda Civic and I can see in a few areas that the clear coat is peeling off. I live in the desert and do a lot of driving down desert highways where a lot of dust hits the car. What products would be good to preserve the life of the clear coat?

    Hi Paul

I moved this over to Detailing 101 as Hot Topics is a section for threads to be placed by moderators.

You should hopefully get an answer here in a timely fashion

I hate to be the one to break it to you Paul, but once your clear coat starts to fail there really isn't any way to stop the spread. Almost always when clear starts to fail it happens where the clear coat and color coat bond, meaning it spreads from the bottom of the clear upward and outward, not from the top down. Sometimes you can slightly minimize the appearance, but that is usually a very short lived concealment.

Agreed. Also be aware that when it rains, water will seep (sp?) under the exposed clear and will cause more clear to loosen up. It will get to the point where you can peel chunks of clear from the paint. You'll need some new paint and a fresh coat of clear to remedy the solution. There is a Clearcoat failure archive on MegsOnline, full of info and pics.

OK folks I found that clear coat failure thread with the graphics. Reminds me of an old 90 Corolla I had--fortunately the engine lasted years longer than the clear coat did. Anyways thanks I figured I'd come here and ask.
