Clearly my poll is flawed, because I did not provide an option for car-NEW-ba; consequently, those who prefer this pronunciation have cast in their lots with the car-NOO-ba pronunciators. While we can't know for sure how many of the car-NOO-ba voters actually prefer the car-NEW-ba pronunciation, it could well be up to 50%, based on the results to the revised poll I posted over at Autopia. The Brits over at Detailing World overwhelming prefer noo-ba. Who would have guessed?
So as a matter of linguistic principle and reassertion of American independence, I am now irrevocably committing myself to car-NEW-ba ... car-NEW-ba ... car-NEW-ba. It has a nice ring to it ...

I'm Japanese and in Japanese, they pronounce it "Karah-nah-bah" which in other countries I've heard more similar to that pronunciation that 'car-new-bah' in America. Unfortunately, those 'other' pronunciations don't seem to click well with Americans and they don't get it right away therefore I have begun to pronounce it 'car-new-bah' when talking to people here in America..i.m. skeptical... of everything.Comment
