  • What do they use at the factory?

I ask this beacause I work at a dealership... Usually our cars arrive in either a plastic wrap (from Mexico) or a cloth car cover/bag (from Germany)... Is there any paint protection applied, or is it just fresh paint right out of the oven? Our cars are subject to the harsh Midwest winter as soon as they arrive. We often use snow brooms to push snow and ice off the exteriors of these vehicles. It is not gentle! Most employees want to push off as much as possible, as quickly as possible. Some cars still have thier protective wrappings, others do not. Is there any wax/sealant on these finishes?

    Hi Vader,

Welcome to MOL, just a friendly FYI the "Hot Topics" section is not for users to post questions or comments, but is instead a place for moderators to place topics that we feel fall into that category.

I moved your thread into Detailing 101 where it best belongs.

That is why one should never buy a new car in the winter.
As for your question, I really don't think the manufacturers would take the time to put a sealant or wax on a new vehicle.

Mercedes and BMW both, to the best of my knowledge, use Menzerna polishes. As far as wax, they usually apply a shipping wax but I haven't the slightest idea who makes it.

          HMMMM...

In the past, Mfg's used a "wax-like" coating for shipping commonly called cosmoline. This is a thick "wax-like" yellow substance you may have seen in the past. It needed a specialized chemical to remove it. There isn't much of this being used anymore, you now see the plastic or bags as mentioned above.

With regards to a traditional thin wax/polymer/LSP type of coating, normally the answer is they do not use any at the factory/plant location. They just use sandpaper, compounds & polishes during the spot repair process to repair any defects on the polishing decks in the plant.

In some cases and on special vehicles, LSP's are applied at the VPC(Vehicle Processing Centers, ports where the cars arrive), In fact, Mercedes Benz approves and uses many of our products, including LSP's, specifically at the VPC's in the US.

Once the car gets to the dealer, it is the dealers choice as to whether or not they apply anything at all to that car. Some dealers prep and some do not.

With that said, we're going to do some additional checking with our OEM specialists to confirm.

          Get back with you soon.

I think this would be a good thread to post the picture with all of the logos of the companies that use Meguiar's products (from the training class).

I would suspect the use of product(s) on the vehicle from the factory/at the dealer is directly related to the price you pay for the vehicle.

In other words, I can't imagine too many Chrysler dealers waxing that $9000 Neon; that $75000 BMW on the other hand....
