  • Rep power?

Will someone please explain the concept of Rep power to me? Like under my user name it says:

    Join Date: Feb 2009

Under Mike Phillip's user name it says his rep power is 289. What does that mean? At one time my rep power was 2. Just was curious as to what happens as your rep power gets higher and higher, and how it gets higher. Thanks!

    Re: Rep power?

I do believe you get the rep points from contributing to the forum and showing off your skills in the showcase area. The more quality posts you make and pics you take, ie really impress someone then they may add a rep point buy clicking that scale looking icon at the bottom left side of your post. I dunno how you could loose rep points unless you do something to make the detailing gods crancky!

Yeah, mostly based on # of posts.

Luckily, most people on here do make usefull contributions, so a high post count isnt just fluff.

People can nominate others for rep power based on a particular post. Users start with 2 rep power, and go from there.

You get one rep point for joining and another rep point for your first post. After that, I don't know what the schedule is.

I have stated my opinion before, but the rep system should be disabled. It is better to have a quality post (using YOUR experience) than have something copied and pasted.

Also if you click on "User CP" in the upper left yellow bar. Then look where it says "Latest Reputation Received" you can see if someone gave you a rep.

What is the difference between rep power and rep points? Like, my rep power is 4 but I have 17 rep points. What does that mean?

                  Have you seen this?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                  I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.

So do you have to get so many rep points before you get an additional rep power? That's what I don't understand, why are the 2 numbers different?

lol beats me, akimel has like 5 green boxes and somewhere around 70 rep power, but Mike Phillips only has 2 green boxes and like 300 rep power

it makes no sense to me

Whats the purpose of having rep points/power? Are you able to view parts of the forums that can't be seen unless a certain rep point as been reached?

                          Re: Rep power?

I found some info about the green reputation "dots" here:

The info below is pasted from this website:
MORE is a nonprofit organization representing thousands of Washington DC area mountain bikers. Founded in 1992, MORE maintains hundreds of miles of natural-surface trails in over 60 state and county parks throughout the DC region.

The User Reputation system allows forum members to leave comments about one anothers' posts, and thereby contribute to their overall 'reputation'.
User Reputation in its simplest form is a ranking of a user's benefit to our forum. Its basis comes from the opinions of all of forum users that choose take part in it.
Users gain and lose reputation based on how their posts are scored by other forum participants. Users with the ability to affect reputation, will either give or take aways points by approving or disapproving with a post's content.
There are two components to the system:
The first is your reputation LEVEL. This is the number of points you have earned as a result of other's opinions. Essentially, someone can agree or disagree with any post and your LEVEL will either increase, decrease or remain the same (in the case that someone does not have any reputation power). As your LEVEL increases, you will have more square pips in your posts (on the upper right corner). The more pips, the more reputation points you have on your LEVEL. Green is positive, red is negative, grey is neutral, and black is disabled. You can disable the display of your reputation LEVEL in your User CP.
The second is your reputation POWER. This is the relative power you have to affect someone else's LEVEL. Your individual power is a calculation based on the length of time participating in the forums, the number of posts, and your own repputation level. So, if you have been here a while, have a decent number of posts, and a good level, your POWER will be higher. Think of this as how you value someone's opinion. You will give more weight to the opinion of a trusted friend than a stranger. You can see your POWER in your User CP. When you give positive reputation, you will add points equal to your POWER to another user. When you give negative reputation, you will remove points equal to half of your POWER to another user. This prevents abuse.
The more you use the reputation system, the more robust the forums will become. It sounds confusing, but it is really pretty simple on the surface. You gain the ability to affect reputation by participating in the forum discussions, by giving out reputation and by receiving reputation. The dots associated with a user represent that user's reputation level as described below:
One green dot () is given for every started 100 reputation points.
From 500 points on, one bright green dot () is given for every started 200 reputation points.
One red dot () is given for every started 100 negative reputation points.
From 500 negative points on, one bright red dot () is given for every started 200 negative reputation points
If a user has 0 reputation points, a gray dot () is displayed.
If a user has chosen to turn off reputation in his UserCP, a black dot () is displayed.
                          ========

Each VBulletin Forum can be programmed differently, so the above info wouldn't apply directly to the way MOL is setup. After finding the information above, my curiosity has been satisfied about Vbulletin REP.

Bottom line to our members: Hand out REP to members that help out others, post informative items, or in any other ways that make this a better forum.
