  • #16 curiosity....

Had some free time yesterday and decided to fool around with my spoiler,(platonicly speaking of course) and noticed that when I applied #16 with a Megs foam applicator, I could feel static electricity while applying. Is this normal? I don't think I've ever experienced that before. Was I using too much down force?
    Just curious.......Regards

Well did you feel the static pulling on the hairs on your arm? What did you do before applying M16. Chances are you probably had some previous wiping action that could have created a static charge. It's nothing to do with M16, but probably just another factor such as your wiping or the wind.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

I had some free time so I decided to strip the existing LSP with an IPA wipe down, waited a few minutes, then ONRd the spoiler, waited another few minutes then applied #16 gently and thinly. Every swipe, I could feel the static....... wierd, and I don't think it's ever happened before. I know the #16 is quite old, could it be compromised in any way?

I'll wait for some others to chime in on this, but I doubt it has been compromised. To the best of my understanding, 16 doesn't have any anti dust capabilities that repel dust in it most likely from a magnetic standpoint. All in all I think your car and you probably just had different static charges

I noticed the same thing whenever wiping a wax or polish off of my fiberglass trunk lid. My guess is it has to do with the material that the panel (or spoiler) is made out of rather than the product.

One of my vehicles has a composite spoiler on it and that is the ONLY place I ever notice static when applying/removing a product - and that's a variety of products by the way. Even then, it isn't all the time and, although I've never consciously paid attention to it, I suspect there's a relationship between the static build up/discharge and relative humidity.

When I get home, I'll try a test spot on metal vs composite, but I suspect your right about the humidity factor.

Mine always creates static like crazy on the Camaro...

                      My BMW... not so much...

Depends on the material used to remove the product as well...

I've noticed static on some surfaces with waxes other than #16 too. Nothing to be worried about
