    What I typically do is:
    1. Cover up the fuse box and alternator in a plastic bag
    2. Get the hose on mist setting and mist down the engine
    3. Spray down with APC+ and let sit for a few minutes
    4. Scrub with brush
    5. Rinse with mist setting
    6. Blow dry with leaf blower
    7. Spray on Hyper Dressing and let sit and dry

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

what I would like to ask also , should I spray the APC or APC + on the plastic part only or in all the engine parts?
Also when I apply the hyper dressing is it only for the plastic part or all the engine part also?

You should be able to apply the products on everything.
Although it is silly to dress metal. Let Hyper Dressing sit for 15 minutes, then you with a terry towel dampened with Hyper Dressing and blot up the excess.
Search around for pictures, they are here.

I just use a soft bristled brush on the engine, and just spray the hyper dressing on and let it sit. Use APC + it has degreasers in it. Here are a few pics

Re: Steps to detail my engine

To tell you the truth, when it comes to brushes for engine detailing you need to get creative. You need to look around for any kind of brush will help you to scrub hard to reach areas as well as easy to reach areas.

I've found the brushes that come with a household or garage dustpan work pretty good because the long bristles can get into hard to reach areas and lightly agitate the degreaser to help remove the built-up grime. It's got a long handle and a long row of bristles so it actually works pretty well.

I have a pink kitty dustpan brush that I've used for this recently and it's actually worked really well even though it's not very Macho...

Believe it or not a facilities brush actually works pretty good. It has a long handle and stiff plastic bristles on a strong loop of twisted wire that you can usually shape.

Also, tinfoil comes in handy sometimes because you can easily form it to a shape and when you're done you can easily remove it and recycle it or dispose of it.

For example, wrap a component with some plastic, now wrap it with tinfoil and scrunch the tinfoil around the plastic to cocoon it. Then just try not to blast it with a high power spray, (spray around it).

Works pretty good, fast, cheap and easy.

Let it sit for 5 minutes
                  [Scrub here if needed]
                  Sprayed off really good
Let the engine run for 5 minutes
Soaked up any excess sitting water
Sprayed Water Based Dressing undiluted over the entire engine bay, and let it sit for a couple of minutes
Wiped down the engine bay with a terry towel dampened with Water Based Dressing
                  Viola! Clean!

Of course, the pictures just don't capture the look of it in real life. Water Based Dressing is a definite good choice for under the hood.

Re: Steps to detail my engine

What confuses me is that I assume every vehicle's "exposed" electrical components are going to vary. The obvious are the alternator and fuse box. But, what about the battery connection cables?

I worry I might miss not covering something important and running into problems!
