      Re: Not happy with results

OK guys, let's make sure we keep this civil.

Brad, I had emailed you and asked you to call me directly so that we could talk about this, even giving you my hours so that you caught me when I was in. Your email reply essentially blew me off.....

      "I cannot call u at 6am, i work 6 days a week.

I dont need help, its not hard to wax a car."

Apparently you are seeking some guidance or assistance with this as you've joined MOL and are asking questions. The group of products you purchased has been shown countless times to do fantastic defect correction on a very wide range of paint systems, but they aren't magic - they don't do the job themselves. They only work when used properly, as is the case with any cleaner, wax, etc regardless of who makes it. There is nothing in any of the products you used that could cause the swirls you're describing, although it is very common that the applicators used and/or the technique used can inflict this sort of marring.

You have to keep in mind that the differences in paint systems means you sometimes need to adjust your technique and/or product mix. Very hard paints can be a real pain to correct because they don't seem to react to anything at first, so you just keep hitting them harder and harder. Very soft paints can sometimes initially come across as being hard because it seems no matter what you do you can't get rid of the marring, when in fact the very process you're using is what's marring the paint. We encountered this exact scenario last night during our Open Garage session. Nic was struggling to achieve his goal when working on a black Mazda Miata even though he was using M105 on a W8207 pad with the G110. The paint always looked hazy, no matter how long he buffed, how much pressure he applied, etc. He tried stepping up to a W7207 cutting pad thinking he needed more muscle to remove the defects, but that didn't help either. It was driving him nuts. Knowing that Mazda Miatas are notorious for having soft paint we suggested he actually take a much more gentle approach to correct the problems, so we got him working with a W9207 finishing pad and M205. We even had him slow the machine down and ease up on the pressure. Two hours later, after battling the paint for several days on and off, that black Miata looked like wet ebony - it was gorgeous. You should have seen the look on his face when we first suggested this approach - you could almost see the big old question mark hanging over his head. But he couldn't argue with the results. Plus, this is a guy who's done a lot of detailing and gets paid to do it.

In recent months we've had a couple people bring a new Honda Fit into the garage, and the paint on those was even more delicate, if that's possible. Everything we threw at it left the paint looking hazy or even lightly swirled. Combinations that are generally considered a mild approach on most other cars (M80 Speed Glaze, W8207 polishing pad) actually made this paint look fairly horrid. We found that something as simple as ColorX or M66 did an outstanding job on removing the defects and leaving a great shine with plenty of depth. But even those had to be applied with nothing more than a finishing pad and a relatively slow speed on the G110.

Many Japanese cars are known to have pretty soft paint. Certainly not all of them do, and obviously it varies from brand to brand, model to model, etc. But it wouldn't surprise us one bit to find that you've got some pretty delicate paint on your '08 Honda and that you're actually hit it harder than you need to. We regularly get phone calls, and read posts here on MOL, claiming that while ScratchX 2.0 removed the offending scratch it also left the paint looking all hazy. Invariably it's the towel being used that caused the haze, and a follow up with the same product but a different applicator resolved the issue. There simply is nothing in a tube of ScratchX itself that can scratch the paint.

I agree. Lets keep this thread going in the right direction. Sometimes it's better to push away from the keyboard instead of typing what you are thinking at any point in time. It is sometimes better to think before you reply. Aquila, we are trying to help you.
