  • Wetsanding+M105 vs M105 vs M86 vs M83 vs UC vs D151

Just got a bottle of D151 (thanks to fellow Malaysian Meg's fanatic KC) and thought it would be a good time to test out the various products that I have accumulated over the years. Purchased a halogen stand lamp over the weekend so it was a good time to do the test.

Some pics of my new halogen lamp and the other detailing supplies:

On with the test. The test vehicle is a Mazda 626 which has never been detailed. As you can see from the before pics this is an ideal specimen to try out the different compounds. The paint was severely oxidised with plenty of swirls and RIDS. The 'winner' of this test would be used on the entire car and will be covered in another post.

Putting the new halogen lamp to good use.

Decided to split the bootlid into six sections for this test. Wetsanded a small portion of the bootlid first. Wetsanded with 1500 grit followed by 2000 grit sandpaper soaked in water + NXT Car Wash.

Bootlid taped up into 6 segments.

Top: Wetsanded (primed the wool pad using KBM so spread the access M105 on that section.) Bottom: M105 only. M105 used with the Solo Maroon Wool Pad.

Top: Ultimate Compound with W8006 (I thought this was more a consumer based product so decided to use the polishing pad.) Bottom: D151 with Solo Maroon Wool Pad.

Top: M83 with W7006 Cutting Pad. Bottom: M86 with Solo Yellow Wool Pad (only had two Maroon wool pads so had to use the yellow with the M86.)

Sample closeup of the condition before:

Trying out the KBM by squirting some water on the wetsanded section after one pass of M105.

    After:

I was shocked at how well this section turned out. M105 finished off amazingly well considering it was with a wool pad. Maybe it works well with the Solo Wool Pads. Would need to try it out on other wool pads to see what the results are.

Two passes with M105. Nice finish but more RIDS visible as compared with the wetsanded section.

LED Reflection also not as sharp and well defined.

Two passes with D151 produced some acceptable results but there were still some oxidization/water marks visible.

UC with W8006. Sorry, didn't take any detailed afters.

The M86 with Solo Yellow Wool did surprisingly well. Maybe it was due to KBM.

M83 with W7006 also produced decent results.

    With the tape removed:

The test was not perfect due to some variances especially with the pads (didn't have enough wool pads) but the final order is as follows:

    1) Wetsanding + M105 (Solo Maroon Wool Pad)
    2) M105 (Solo Maroon Wool Pad)
    3) M86 (SoloYellow Wool Pad)
    4) M151 (Solo Maroon Wool Pad)
    5) M83 (W7006 Cutting Pad)
    6) Ultimate Compound (W8006 Polishing Pad)

Decided to finish the rest of the car with M105. Will post the results in another thread.

Feedback and comments are most welcome.

    nice comparison and great pictures...
Wetsanding and following it up with #105 on a wool pad will get you great and fast results :]... but be careful of how much clear you have left

Thanks for the kind comments. Agreed, the best results were from the wetsanding but the thought of doing it for the whole car..... ???!!!??? M105 alone was already amazing. Impressive product.

Thanks for taking the time to not only do this comparison, but to write it all up and post all these pictures - it's quite a task in itself!
