  • Well, here I am. (heavy sigh.)

Well, I can't really believe this, but here I am.
See, until now, my car detailing history consisted of the following:

    Spic 'N Span.

It's all ya really need. Works equally well on everything. Paint, glass, wheels, motor, carpet, upholstry, you name it. PLUS, you don't have to rinse it off!

For stubborn stuff like bugs and bird poo, just rub REALLY hard!
Some times, I would use a "good" car soap that had wax already in it to make the car REALLY shine.
    (are you getting the picture?)

    Fast forward to now:

Y'all can blame our President for this one. Not my fault.
Remember that "Cash for Clunkers" deal? Well, it works.
They actually gave me $4,500 for my smoke-belching, oil drinking 4x4, w/ 178k miles.

So I put fresh coat hangars on the muffler, and zoomed off to the closest dealer, before they ran out of my tax money.
So now, at 50 years of age, for the first time in my life, I have a brand new car. 2010 Subaru Forester, "Satin Pearl" finish. (off-white metal flake)
Aside from my wife, it's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my driveway.

Suddenly, I have this overwhelming interest in keeping it looking good.

I set about educating myself on the in's and out's of auto detailing. WOW! What an education! After I slogged through a lot of "voo-doo" science, absurd product claims, and amazingly intense arguments over which wax is best, I'm pretty convinced that Meguiar's product line is of very good quality, well thought out, reasonably priced, safe, and AVAILABLE locally.
    So... here I am.

    Thanks for listening.
Be gentle with me. It's my first time.

Welcome to MOL, Berk - great intro post, by the way. Glad to see you'll be leaving the Spic 'N Span for the kitchen floor from here on!

Re: Well, here I am. (heavy sigh.)

You can really keep it looking good without too much work.

                1. Wash - Gold Class Soap, 2 buckets, good quality towels/sponges.
                2. Clay - Smooth Surface Clay kit, maybe buy an extra Quick Detailer bottle.
                3. ColorX
                4. Wax - Nxt 2.0
                5. Maintain - After future washes, follow up with Ultimate Quick Wax.

And dont forget to clean the mufflers/exhaust, esp if you have the exhaust tips...

Re: Well, here I am. (heavy sigh.)

Thanks for such a warm welcome!

So far, all I have accomplished is "Wash a Car" on the new Forester.
I used Gold Class (wonderful stuff) with the proper 2-bucket method.
Couldn't find any "genuine" lamb's wool, so used a MF mit. Dried with waffle weaves.

For the rest, I got a GREAT idea!

To learn the technique and products, I practice everything first on my WIFE'S car!
                      (sneeky, eh?)
SHE thinks I'm just being a wonderful husband. ACTUALLY, I'm doing clandestine "Detailing Experiments" and logging the results.
She has an '03 Sonata, which has never been washed or waxed.
Needles to say, the finish is a mess.

This is going to take quite a while. That car needs a lot of work, so I just work one area in the morning, while it's cool.
I'll spare you the borning details, until I find the proper place to post it.

This place is a GREAT resource! I've been lurking for some time now.
A big "THANKS" to all who have contriubited here.
