Re: Tim Lingor's *New* "Lab Sample P" Review!

Just wondering if anyone else has seen any negative effects on exterior trim when using ASD (all season dressing.) I personally have seen two negative effects both on ford pick up trucks, trim on top of the bed & tailgate & whell well trim on same truck but different version. I've noticed after using this dressing on customers vehicles several times that as i come back every couple weeks the trim keeps looking worse, from worn out black to now a horrible gray. I havent totally decided it is my fault by using the same stuff i use on tires as the trim & I feel responsible, almost like i might need to get them new trim since they relay on me to keep thier cars looking tip top & I made it worse. I hope it's not my fault, what do you think?

Hi Tim, I was wondering if you could update us on the durability of the Lab Sample P when applied to the interior trims. It's been a little over a month now

      Thanks!

        Hey,

Because the Ulimate Protecant is supposed to have extreme durability over time, an update at 1 month may be a little premature.

However, for a quick update, on the interior as you have asked about, it is lasting very well. Because it dries unlike other dressings, it does not seem to attract as much dust as other dressings. As such, the interior of the test vehicles look fantastic.

I will continue to provide updates over time...

I wonder how this product is going to perform on the interior of the Nissan 350z as the 350z door panels are made of some awkward material... Hopefully I can experiment with this if no one has already done so on a 350z. Perhaps the interior quality has been improved for later years as opposed to older models where there were concerns of the poor material.

According to Rasky's test of UP on a 350Z it worked quite well. He made a similar comment on the visual quality of the 350Z's interior panels.

Re: Tim Lingor's *New* "Lab Sample P" Review!

                    Sorry for the late reply...

The Ultimate Protectant has held up very well in most cases though that does seem to be dependant on the type of plastic and what was on the plastic prior to its application.

In most cases, UP did a fantastic job, with a non-greasy (though it can be a little slippery when it rains so avoid using it on bumper inserts and pick-up truck bed liners etc), and a moderate sheen look. It does not seem to attract dust as quickly as other dressings do, but still attracts some; it is still a dressing, but with that in mind, it does an excellent job!

The only issues I had with my pre-production samples is on certain plastics (and with cold temperatures), unless it was cleaned really well of previously applied dressings. In that case, the UP would streak after a light rain shower. Therefore, if the plastic was dressed previously with another dressing, I would make sure to clean it thoroughly so that you can get the maximum durability out of the product. I would also not apply it in cold temperatures as I found that it does not spread well and again, has issues bonding. It may have to do with the pores and temperature expansion, but I am not a chemist so I can only comment on what I found. But in most cases, it worked very very well!

What I liked most about the product was its look. It has the right amount of sheen in that it makes the plastic look clean and new, and not artificially dressed.

                    I hope this helps!

                          ***UPDATE!!!***

                          Hey everyone,

After testing out Meguiar's NEW Ultimate Protectant (UP) for the last several months, I am now in the position to give an opinion about the product's performance. If you have not read the review or seen the photos from the beginning of this review, please view them on the first page of this thread.

I have tested many products over the years and the first thing I learned early on is to never jump to conclusions in regards to a product's performance. I need to see how the product performs over the long term and in different situations in order to give an accurate opinion. In the case of Meguiar's Ultimate Protectant (UP) I needed to see for myself if the product did indeed live up to its advertised ability.

Meguiar's new Ultimate Protectant is an excellent product But in order to obtain the best performance from it, I discovered several attributes that one should keep in mind when using this product. Having used many dressings over the years, I believed a dressing is just a dressing; but not in this case. Meguiar's new Ultimate Protectant takes a very unique approach and with it a different application process as well.

When I first received my first pre-production sample, I applied it to several different types of plastics, both interior and exterior pieces in order to gauge its performance. This is where I had a few issues. On some plastics, the UP did not bond well at all. In some cases I discovered that if the plastic part had been previously dressed with a dressing (I normally use Meguiar's All Season Dressing or Trim Detailer), the UP applied nicely but would run and streak after one rain storm. Being a pre-production sample I thought something was amiss so I requested a second pre-production sample to eliminate any errors or product differences. While waiting for the second sample to arrive, I began applying the UP to even more plastics on several different vehicles and this is where I discovered a few things.

Firstly, UP does behave differently on certain types of plastics. Just like some compounds work better on different paints, so too does Meguiar's UP. On most plastics it spreads ultra easily, leaving a nice uniform coat. On other plastics, it may need a couple of applications in order to even out the coverage. Again this appears to be both plastic and vehicle specific. Nothing serious, but something to keep in mind never-the-less.

Secondly, one must pre-clean the plastic thoroughly and I mean thoroughly with a good quality cleaner like Meguiar's APC(+) or M39 before applying the UP. On the plastics where I had bonding issues, I had previously applied other dressings, usually Meguiar's All Season Dressing, or M38. Though the previous dressings appeared to be gone, they were not. As a result, UP would not bond well. BUT once I cleaned the parts, the UP went on and stayed on! This is something one needs to keep in mind when detailing a customer's car as you have no idea what dressings were applied previously. Therefore, you should thoroughly clean the plastic before applying UP, IMHO.

Thirdly, I found that UP does seem to bond better when used in warmer temperatures. I tried applying the UP to plastic that was very cold (as in temperatures close to, but not freezing) and while it went on, it did not bond well. Once I warmed-up the plastic in a garage, the UP did bond properly. Again, I must stress that it was cold, and very damp. When used in normal detailing conditions, it is not an issue at all.

Once I figured out the optimum application methods, I have to say that UP is an excellent product! What I like most is that it applies easily, spreads easily and leaves a non-greasy feel and a nice satin sheen! The plastic does not look ultra dressed with a greasy look to it. Instead, it leaves a nice, like-new, look to the plastic and it does not seem to attract dust like conventional dressings! I have found all kinds of uses for it including: side skirts, air dams, windshield cowls, interior trim etc etc! And BEST of all, the product lasts!! The product is unlike any other dressing product I have used, and I have used many! Just remember to keep in mind my above comments during application and you will love this product!

Below are two photos. Meguiar's Ultimate Protectant was applied to the cowl over 2 months ago. During this time, the car and therefore the UP has been snowed on several times, rained on, driven daily in storms, and even has been subjected to several coin-op car washes! The results below are what I discovered this past weekend after a thorough Spring clean. No other dressings have been applied. Those pictures are of the actual UP applied 2 months ago! Too me, it looks pretty darn good! Remember, this is on a 2003 Toyota that is driven daily and in kinds of harsh conditions!!

In the end, Meguiar's NEW Ultimate Protectant will change the way you will perceive a typical plastic dressing. That reminds me, I have to go dress the mirrors on my truck, after all summer is just around the corner!

Thanks for the tips and updates, Tim. Based largely on your review (which I read just before SEMA last year) I purchased a bottle of UP with my last ADS order. I hope to give it a try this weekend.

Awesome write up (as usual), Tim!! Nice to see UP holding up so well for you after this much time.

As Tim has noted, application of Ultimate Protectant is different than that of other vinyl & plastic dressings. For a run down of proper application process, please see How to apply Ultimate Protectant
