Editing Posts

Hey I noticed that I cannot edit posts any more after 1 minute. I don't know if you guys meant to set it like this. If so, please reconsider as it was very helpful to be able to edit the post to correct grammar/information up to at least 30 minutes after posting. I often write my message and then shortly after re-read it. If I can improve the information I do.

This time limit is lifted or reduced on a fairly regular basis, and without fail, someone abuses it almost immediately. Michael Stoops can chime in with the latest official view on this tomorrow.

Exactly! As the past Super Mod of this site, I can not tell you how many times we have had to deal with people who have abused the edit function... . Is it for nefarious reasons or just plain narcissism, their actions have necessitated this shorter editing time frame. The ones this hurts the most are the diligent people who just want to go in and correct simple spelling and grammatical errors.... As such, this is a case where a few have ruined it for the majority... .

For example, call them Arm Chair Bandits or Keyboard Commandos, or whatever, they come on to site, posting information they have amassed from reading posts from MOL and other sites and then portray themselves as an authority without any real actual experience themselves, misleading people new to detailing and new to Meguiar’s Online... As a result, many people will post to the thread correcting their incorrect misinformation which often leads to a dispute as the original poster now feels foolish for posting such nonsense. The original poster then goes back to his incorrect post and edits his or her statements which then mess up subsequent posts, making the thread confusing and incoherent. Again in may be accidental or it may be for nefarious or narcissistic reasons, but their actions make all of us suffer as a result. The whole goal is to keep the information presented on MOL as accurate and factual so that people can get the most out of their Meguiar's products!

With the above said, I am not criticizing those individuals who have a history of mostly cutting and pasting info or posting links as that info, while not their own, is still helpful to the beginner detailer who may need to learn the basics and now have links with information they can now read.

While the 1 minute edit time is pretty brief, (I would prefer it is moved to 5-10 minutes), there are reasons why it was necessitated. Mistakes happen and if there are any accidental errors, any of the Mods or the Admin, I am sure, would be more than happy to go in a fix the mistakes for you. Just send them a PM!

Tim summed it up pretty well...... but edit time is always subject to review. Apologies for any inconvenience, but the "Preview Post" button is a pretty good tool itself!

Yeah I guess I'll just have to start doing more previews... Too bad you guys can't allow instant edits for those who've been here for a year or who have accumulated a good amount of helpful posts. Thanks for the explanation Tim.

It's very true! It is much easier to see your mistakes in the Preview Post version, than in the actual post editor area where you type your Posts.

We should all just make it a habit to preview, then post.

If you do think of something while in the same train of though, that really belong with what you just said, maybe even in the middle of two paragraphs of text, and you feel you must add it before someone else reads the post, it is really annoying to have to add it in another post. This can cause confusion, is annoying for the poster and just adds superfluous posts to the forum. I think that, like Tim said, the time should be inreased to 5-10 minutes.

I have a for sale thread. I like to remove pics/info on items that I have there that sold. Is it possible to go and re-edit it when necessary or am I going to just have to inform members if they ask about the items?

I would just like to keep it current and up to date.

Your best bet would be to respond to your own thread with updates. That will also keep it bumped up to the top, which isn't a bad thing either.

Senior members (a certian post level) should be allowed to edit. I'm on about a dozen forums, detailing and otherwise, and they all have edit privileges. Not sure why this forum would have so much trouble with people abusing it more than any other forum. At least allow same day editing. Please.
