How long can we leave it for on any given paint surface? How is it on residue left behind?

        Re: Professional Masking Tape

My Question: Meguiar's branded 3M painters tape (since 3M is the owner) or is it actually different and made for cars?

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

        I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
        Remove swirls my friends.

This is designed for short term use, as in the time it takes for a detailing project.

The blue and green 3M painters tape developed for body shop environments is kind of overkill for detailing situations. Those tapes need to be extremely gentle with regard to adhesive so that they can be laid on fresh paint in order to mask off for custom, multi colored paint jobs. In those cases the paint may be just a couple of hours old.

These new tapes are NOT designed for body shop use on fresh paint but are perfectly fine on fully cured paint, OEM paint, etc. In fact, for a detailing setting they should stick better with less lift at the edges. Residue after removal is a non issue unless you leave it on for days, but they you're falling outside the window of the products intended use.

Hummmm... I rather stick with the green tape. No residue after removal. I will have to try it out to see if this one is different than what I can already buy at Home Dept.

The Blue 3M vinyl tape we used at a Meguiar's advanced class was REALLY good. I believe we were beta testing at your shop? Do you have any information on it's status?

Not at this time, no. If memory serves, however, that is a fairly pricey tape really designed for body shop use on fresh paint. These new tapes are a better overall fit for a detailing environment on cured paint, both from a price and performance standpoint.

If the edges stay down, it would be worth checking this tape out. Will have to get a roll to experiment.
