  • Why does Meguiar's offer so many different waxes?

Over the years Meguiar's have developed some very unique and highly specialized waxes that have attained their own following of loyal fans. All of the waxes Meguiar's manufactures are exclusive formulas, each offering the end-user its own unique features and benefits. Two people with identical cars with the identical color and type of paint may prefer different Meguiar's waxes depending on budget, different needs and goals, and what looks good to their eyes. Who are we to argue? You might have heard the terms "wax" and "sealant" used interchangeably, and that's because they really are interchangeable - both provide a layer of protection for the paint. Usually a "wax" is a product that contains carnauba, whereas a "sealant" is typically a synthetic product. Many products contain a blend of carnauba wax and synthetic polymers. What you choose depends entirely on you, but it is not necessary to use a wax and a sealant - one or the other will suffice.

But really, why so many wax products? Consumers, retailers, professionals, large reconditioning facilities and other high volume applications have different needs and preferences. Some people do not want to spend all day detailing their car; they just want a simple and effective product that will do a good job of cleaning and protection when applied by hand, and do not want to spend a lot of money. Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is the perfect choice for the consumer as it offers all these things in one bottle, and at a very affordable price. An auto reconditioning centers may also be looking for an 'all in one' type of product, but they want a thorough cleaner to remove the most serious defects and they need to work very fast because they handle literally hundreds of vehicles every day . These facilities use either rotary buffers or dual action polishers. They need something that is compatible with these tools and that offers excellent defect removal. They also demand very fast drying times and very easy wipe off. And since these facilities deal with such large numbers of vehicles, these products must be available in large quantities, not just 12-ounce bottles. Paint Reconditioning Cream has been developed specifically for that audience and gives them everything they need. A professional detailer that specializes in exotic cars may think that the different products impart a slightly different look, and may choose one product over another depending on application, their client's demands, etc. Needs and desires vary, so our waxes and sealants also vary.

Meguiar's waxes are grouped into four categories: Pure Waxes, Polish Waxes, Cleaner Waxes and Spray Waxes. The first two groups always work better when applied to a well-prepared surface. They do not offer any cleaning ability so they do not contain abrasives. You can use them as often as like without fear of being too aggressive. Cleaner waxes provide different levels of cleaning ability depending on the specific product. How effectively they accomplish this task depends on the hardness of the paint and how the product is applied - by hand, dual-action polisher, or rotary. Spray waxes are designed to be used only as a booster product and are not a substitute for a proper wax job. Let's look at the different products within each of these categories.

    ____________________________________________________________________

Pure Waxes - When we say "pure wax" we mean a wax that contains neither cleaners nor polishing oils; they simply provide protection for the paint. These are often excellent choices for new vehicles, for cars that are well maintained, or cars with fully prepped finishes. If your goal is to eliminate swirl marks, scratches or defects from the paint you will need to use a dedicated paint cleaner before applying a pure wax.

Deep Crystal Carnauba Wax - This premium quality liquid wax blends Brazilian Number One Carnauba Wax with an exotic blend of conditioning oils, as well as long lasting polymers, silicones and resins for long lasting durability. Deep Crystal Carnauba wax leaves behind a brilliant, crystal clear finish with incredible water beading action. It can be applied by hand, orbital or D/A polisher and is available in 16 ounce liquid only.

M26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax - This pure wax blends the highest quality Brazilian Number One Carnauba Wax with costly polymers, silicones, and special resins to create eye dazzling gloss and depth of color while providing durable paint protection. M26 Hi Tech Yellow Wax is a favorite in the show car scene because of the deep, rich finish it gives to a very well prepared surface. M26 can be applied by hand, orbital, D/A polisher, or rotary and is available in 16 ounce liquid, 1 gallon liquid, or 11 ounce paste versions.

M16 Professional Paste Wax - This is a traditional "hard carnauba" paste wax for people who enjoy the aesthetics of applying a paste wax by hand. Introduced in 1951 and virtually unchanged since then, this is the first automotive wax Meguiar's introduced to their Mirror Glaze line. #16 is formulated to provide long lasting durable protection under extreme environmental conditions under hot temperatures. #16 dries fast, dries clear, and will not turn white on pebble textured black plastic trim. While no longer manufactured for sale in the US, it is still available in other parts of the world and remains a favorite among enthusiasts everywhere, often comanding premium prices when it does turn up for sale in the US either through private party sale or via an online auction site. M16 is available only in 11 ounce paste form.

Synthetic X-Press Liquid Wax - Meguiar's Synthetic X-Press Liquid Wax uses a unique blend of wax and hydrophobic polymer agents to produce deep, rich gloss with lasting protection. This formula provides ease of application and instant wipe-off, making it the perfect choice for any production environment where Meguiar's quality results are as essential as speed and efficiency. Because this product is geared for volume production environments, it is available only in 1 gallon liquid form. Synthetic X-Press Liquid Wax can be applied by hand, orbital or D/A polisher.

    ____________________________________________________________________

    Polish/Waxes
    - This class of waxes blends excellent protection with rich polishing oils that will increase the depth and gloss of any healthy paint. As with Pure Waxes, optimum results will come when used on a finish that has been cleaned of defects such as bonded surface contaminants and swirls, light scratches, oxidation and other below surface defects. Due to the composition of these products some concealment of very fine swirls may occur, but defect removal is not the intent of these waxes.

Ultimate Wax - Thin Film Technology makes application and wipe off of this fully synthetic wax virtually effortless. Hydrophobic Polymer Technology reduces surface tension so water rolls right off, and the advanced polymers crosslink to form a protective barrier that accurately reflects & amplifies light for incredible depth & mirror-like shine. The liquid version will not stain black plastic and vinyl trim, and both liquid and paste can be applied to a warm surface, even in direct sunlight. Suitable for hand, orbital or DA application, Ultimate Wax comes in either 16 ounce liquid or 11 ounce paste versions.

NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0 - This pure synthetic paint protectant will do more to increase optical clarity, shine and gloss, while providing a high level of protection against environmental attack. It's unique Hydrophobic Polymer Technology provides relentless water beading and protection against oxidation, corrosion, UV rays and surface degradation. Suitable for application by hand, orbital or D/A polisher, NXT Tech Wax 2.0 is available as an 18 ounce liquid or 11 ounce paste

Gold Class Carnauba Plus Wax - With an improved formula for 2010, Gold Class Carnauba Plus contains a special blend of premium carnauba wax and advanced polymers that leave even deeper reflections and a brilliant shine. The rich polishing oils contained in Gold Class Carnauba Plus will dramatically enhance the depth and beauty of your paint. Apply by hand, orbital or D/A polisher. Available in 16 ounce liquid or 11 ounce paste format.

M21 Synthetic Sealant 2.0 - Synthetic polymer formulation provides technologically advanced paint care and protection. M21 produces a noticeably deeper, darker, more reflective paint finish while the Hydrophobic Polymer Technology deliver extreme water beading and protection. It's unique formulation elminates very fine scratches and swirls, creating a flawless finish. M21 glides on easy, with a smooth, resistance-free wipe-off. Application is by hand, orbital, D/A polisher or rotary and it is available in liquid form only, in either 16 ounce or 64 ounce containers.

    Cleaner/Waxes
    - This class of waxes not only protects the finish, but cleans it as well. Fine swirls, embedded dirt, even light etching from bird droppings and acid rain can be eliminated by using a cleaner wax. The level of cleaning will vary from product to product and from one application method to another. For someone looking to maintain a daily driven vehicle for years to come without doing multiple steps, or to restore lost lustre to a slightly neglected finish, a cleaner wax is an excellent choice.Note: Although all Meguiar's cleaner waxes contain chemical cleaners, abrasive cleaners or both, you can safely use them on all finishes, new or old. The cleaning ability of Meguiar's cleaner waxes is effective but gentle, and all of these products are safe for use on clear coat finishes.

Meguiar's Cleaner/Wax - Introduced in 1973 as Meguiar's first consumer market product, Cleaner Wax has a track record more than a quarter century long of producing excellent results on finishes in fair to good condition. Meguiar's Cleaner Wax is a combination of non-abrasive chemical cleaners, rich conditioning oils and synthetic polymers, silicones and waxes; all ingredients for long lasting paint protection. The chemical cleaners in Meguiar's cleaner wax will clean and remove light oxidation, pore-embedding stains, built-up road grime, and air-borne contaminants. The trade secret conditioning oils will rejuvenate your paint, restoring the paint's original oils lost over time, resulting in a darker, more clear finish. The synthetic polymers, waxes and silicones will seal the paint, locking in the rich conditioning oils and protect the finish against corrosion, oxidation, chemical attack, and the detrimental effect caused by day-in, day-out driving and exposure to the environment. Widely available and very inexpensive, Cleaner Wax is available in 16 ounce liquid and 11 ounce paste formats and can be applied by hand, orbital or D/A polisher.

ColorX - ColorX is like Meguiar's traditional Cleaner/Wax, (A-1216), on steroids. It's more effective at cleaning neglected finishes, restoring optimum clarity and leaving behind an incredibly long lasting synthetic polymer paint protectant than, without having to resort to harsh abrasives and without giving up the kind of stellar results you have come to expect from Meguiar's products. ColorX can be applied by hand, orbital or D/A polisher and is available in 16 ounce liquid form only.

M06 Professional Cleaner/Wax - This is the professional version of Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, meaning it is a bit more aggressive than the consumer version so it's perfectly suited for one-step applications on neglected surfaces. Because M06 is found in our Mirror Glaze Professional line it can be applied by rotary buffer for even more cleaning action, as well as by hand, orbital or D/A polisher. It is available in liquid form only, in either 16 ounce or 64 ounce packaging.

M20 Polymer Sealant - With M20 Meguiar's has combined the cleaning ability of traditional cleaner waxes with the polymer protection of a high tech sealant. Polymer Sealant is a unique blend of polymers, silicones and imported waxes that creates a brilliant high gloss finish combined with durable, long lasting protection.. Safe and effective on all paint finishes, including clear coats. Available in liquid form only in 16 ounce and 64 ounce containers, M20 can be applied by hand, orbital, D/A polisher or rotary.

M66 Quick Detailer - Developed for volume production facilities where powerful defect removal and ease of use are required. The rich polishing oils leave behind a lustrous finish while Meguiar's state-of-the-art synthetic polymer waxes leave behind a long lasting durable protective finish. Perfect for Used Car dealers and wholesalers looking for a fast and effective one-step product. Available only as a liquid in 1 gallon containers, M66 can be applied by hand, orbital, D/A polisher or rotary.

D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream - D151 is Meguiar's latest all in one product specifically designed for high volume reconditioning facilities, auctions, detailers and car dealerships. This is currently the only Meguiar's product in this class that utilizes SMAT abrasive technology. With this one liquid you can cut, polish, and wax in either a 1 or 2 step process; simply switch to the least aggressive tool/pad combination on the 2nd step and re-apply PRC for the ultimate solution to high volume paint reconditioning. D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream is specifically designed for high volume reconditioning facilities, auctions, detailers and car dealerships. Available as a 1 gallon liquid only, it can be applied by hand, orbital, D/A polisher or rotary.

    Spray Waxes
    - These products should not be confused with proper liquid or paste waxes. They are intended to be a maintenance product that will extend the life of a liquid or paste wax, and help to boost the shine between proper wax applications. These products are very easy and convenient to use and can be used after every wash for that extra added "pop" to the finish.

Meguiar's Quik Wax - With Meguiar's Spray Wax, you can quickly restore that "just waxed" look in minutes. Recently reformulated, Quik Wax now darkens and deepens medium to dark colored paints, while significantly increasing gloss and shine. Quik Wax also helps to fill in and hide unsightly swirls and scratches. This is not a replacement for a quick detailer, but instead, the natural companion to a quick detailer. Using a quick detailer first to remove light dust and fresh contaminants, then immediately going over the finish with Quik Wax to maximize optical clarity, shine and gloss. Quik Wax can be used with all Meguiar's waxes. This is the ecomonical choice in spray wax products.

NXT Generation Spray Wax - This liquid spray on wax is built with ESP's (Engineered Synthetic Polymers) for today's advanced polymer finishes. NXT Spray Wax is an excellent maintenance product to maintain your protection and enhance appearance. This is not a quick detailer and should not be used to remove dirt and dust accumulation. It is also not a replacement for a regular coating of any wax.

Ultimate Quik Wax - As the name implies, this is indeed the Ultimate spray wax product. UQW contains the same Hydrophobic Polymer Technology found in our NXT Generation Tech Wax 2.0, providing relentless water beading and protection. Our new technology leaves no white residue on plastic and trim, and it can even be applied in direct sunlight! Simply mist on and wipe off. Even with this advanced technology, UQW is compatible with all Meguiar's waxes.

Synthetic X-Press Spray Wax - Similar to Ultimate Quik Wax above, this product is geared more toward the volume user, professional detailer, etc. It still provides the easy mist on and wipe off characteristics of UQW as well as the hydrophobic polymers and no residue formulation. The scent has been changed for volume use, and it is packaged in 1 gallon containers to better suit the target audience.

As a final note, we are often asked how long a wax will last. There is no definitive answer to that question because there are so many variables involved. Any wax will last longer on a well prepared surface, one that is devoid of bonded surface contaminants and below surface defects, than it will on a neglected surface. That is because all waxes are designed to bond to paint, not to the contaminants that result from daily exposure to industrial fallout and other pollutants. Exposure to heavy rain, extreme heat, harsh detergents, road salt and other things will have an impact on the longevity of any wax or sealant. A car that is garage kept and only driven on clear summer days will keep a coat of wax longer than one driven daily on salty roads in the dead of winter. As a general rule of thumb Meguiar's recommends waxing your vehicle every three months or so, depending on exposure. Proper surface prep is key though, and you can learn more about Meguiar's 5 Step Paint Care Cycle by clicking HERE.

But the REAL reason Meguiar's offers so many waxes is because suckers like me will buy it by the case.

Sadly- I anxiously await the NEXT new wax they will certainly release so I can buy TWO cases of it (one for me and one to give away to unsuspecting souls that will soon see things my way.... muahahahahaha!!!!)

        Nice write-up Mike!

Michael - great thread, thank you.

Does the order in which you have the cleaner waxes listed correlate to their cleaning aggressiveness/strength, i.e., does M20 have more cleaning ability than ColorX and M06?

Thanks for such an informative post, Michael!

I have a question: are all those waxes good for fiberglass surfaces? I need to wax a small boat's hull made of fiberglass. Since Meguiar's Marine/Flagship line is not easy at all to find in my country, which are the Meguiar's automotive waxes that will be good for it? Are silicone-based products O.K. for glass fiber surfaces? Thanks for your help.

On a side note, I've always found it strange that Meguiar's calls some of their products "Polish Waxes" and then states that "They offer no cleaning ability and are therefore abrasive free". Do they contain chemical-only paint cleaners, then? I always tend to think that something that is called polish would contain abrasives meant to level the paint and correct scratches in a more or less aggressive way.

Any of the automotive waxes or cleaner/waxes would work fine on painted or gel-coated fiberglass. Get coat is a tougher surface though, so you wont get the same correction ability. Of course the Marine Line waxes will be designed to last longer in a marine environment, but an automotive wax will be better than nothing.

However, do note that the Marine products are not meant for automotive paints/surfaces.

With Meguiars, polish means something that adds polishing oils to the paint to nourish and keep the paint healthy. Not a cleaning step.
