  • Help me choose

I have been looking at orbitals and can't decide between the three in my price range. I know this is a meguires forum but the 3 I am looking at Are the Giots Garage, the Porter Cable and Meguiars. From your experience what would you buy and why. Again i am a total noob to machines. My car is a 2010 with good paint. Some light toweling swirls and a couple light scratches. I am just getting older and tired of doing everything by hand. Oh yeah paint is dark grey if it matters. Thanks for all your help, I'm really impressed with the site, there is alot of useful info here!

For what it is worth, I have both the Griot's Garage 6" DA buffer and the Griot's Garage 3" DA buffer. I have had them for about 18 months and love them. I wish I had bought them earlier. I haven't used Porter Cable or the Meguiars but I suspect any one of the three would work perfectly well. Here is a picture of my car after being polished.

The PC and the G110 are essentally the same except that the PC has a one year warranty and the G110 has a lifetime.

The G100 (lifetime warranty) was the same tool as the PC 7424, the G110 (one year warranty) had a bit more power and a few other upgrades. It is no longer available.

Meguiar's G110v2 (one year warranty) is our current offering - more power than the G110/PC7424 (and apparently more than the 7424XP according to several reviews) and the following:

        - even steps in speed between settings (ie, Speed 1 = 1800OPM, 2 = 2800, 3 = 3800, etc up to 6 = 6800 OPM)
        - cruise control circuitry will increase torque when pressure is applied and tool starts to bog down a bit
        - only D/A on the market with side port access for easy brush maintenance

Go with Porter Cable. It will last you forever, i had mine for 4 years and it still works great.

Go with the G110v2. It sounds like a great machine. I have the G100, G110. I like them both.

I'm afraid we don't have a store here in Irvine. You can order the G110v2 from a variety of online sources (meguiarsdirect.com, autodetailingsolutions.com, autogeek.com, amazon.com or detailing.com) or you can check with detailing.com and see if they have one in stock locally here in SoCal.

                  Re: Help me choose

Went to detailing.com's local store today and picked up the 110v2! Along with some yellow and black 2.0 pads, a 3" backing plate and some 4" pads, a grit guard, and some #21. I am stoked to get to work if it ever quits raining here! I do have a question though here's my list of what I am going to do.

                  1. Wash with NXT
                  2. Clay with smooth clay kit.
                  3. Swirl X and yellow pad at speed 3-4
                  4. Deep Crystal polish with yellow pad at speed 3-4
                  5. #21 with black pad, wait 24 hours?
                  6. 2 thin coats of NXT wax with black pad speed 1-2

Is there anything I'm missing? Is anything do I not need swirl x and polish? Car is a 2010 with a couple of light scratches and some very light swirls. Dark Grey if it matters. What do I need to keep this up, I usually wax every couple months, should I also polish at the same time or is that too often? I'm a noob at this so all help will be greatly appreciated!

                    Re: Help me choose

Don't be afraid to spin the G110v2 at speed 5 when using the SwirlX on the 8207 polishing pad. For defect correction you want that additional power - keep in mind that SwirlX is pretty mild stuff too.

It sounds like your regular waxing interval is good, but you don't need to apply a pure polish each time. In fact, on a new car you don't need to apply it at all - we always consider this an optional step. That said, if you want the maximum possible shine out of a darker colored vehicle, it will make a subtle yet noticeable difference.

Since you're local, you might want think about attending one of our Saturday Classes. They're free and you'll learn a lot about proper use of this tool and our products in general. The next class is January 30th and there's plenty of space still available.

I'm a plumber and I 'm on call for emergencys that weekend I will make one of them soon though. Does it sound like all my steps are in order? How long do I have to let the # 21 sealant cure, and I buff off then let cure or apply let cure then buff off?
