Re: My "rustoleum $50 roll-on paint job"

Years ago Ive seen a Checker Cab that was restored and it was painted the rustoleum roller method, and it looked very good. It was very shiny with no orange peel.

Got some sun shots at the car show yesterday:

You can see a little hologramming - I rushed the finishing process to get the hood back on for the show. I'll go back after the paint has cured a bit longer and 205 it

That came out great. In a month a 205 polish and a coat of wax and you got it.

Awesome result on that hood !

I have seen some pretty amazing results off roll-on paintjobs with tustoleum !

I painted my car with Rustoleum Gloss black and I can't believe how shiny it is. This is after I rolled on 5 coats then wet-sanded and buffed it out.

Outstanding work!! That light hologramming should be simple to remove with a D/A follow up.

You know, when you consider that fact that using a roller to apply the paint means you're putting down quite a bit, then you wet sand it totally flat and buff it out, it's really not a huge surprise that this can work as well as it does. But since rolled on Rustoleum isn't normally buffed out like this, we don't generally think about the possibilities!

Thanks I had seen those videos and they helped convince me to do it. The one thing I haven't seen though are close up pictures (detailing style) of the results. All of the pictures tend to be 20 footers. That is why I wanted to try this out from a detailer's perspective.

Yeah, I had it looking perfect after 205, then against my better judgment I decided to top it with Nxt 2.0 (a no-no on fresh paint). I ended up putting holograms back into the 3 day old paint LOL...it needs to harden up for a few weeks then I'll 205 it again. This time I'll wait 6 weeks before sealing it

Really nice job. Did you sand down to bare metal and then apply a primer before the final coats?

I didn't go down to bare metal where I could avoid it. There were 3 layers of paint already on the car so i wanted to take off at least a couple.

It helps to have a uniform color when you start laying down the Rustoleum. The rustoleum is thinned out to the consistency of milk, so the coats are really thin. You can get full coverage after 3 coats if you start with a solid base color. You should put on at least 6 coats, wetsanding every other coat with progressively finer paper. To finish up, I'd put on 3 coats before the final sanding with 1000 then 2000 grit.

That makes sense and it's something I would consider trying. What grit did you use to sand down the two original layers? I watched a couple of the videos posted earlier in the thread and was impressed that the $50 paint job held out so well after 3 years.

My 17 year-old Civic has horrible clear coat failure on the horizontal surfaces (roof and trunk) but the car is worth only $1200 max. So I really don't want to spend even $300 to get the bargain basement paint job from Maaco or Earl Scheib.

The one problem I foresee is color matching. The car is teal green. I guess a good paint store can do a decent job of color matching if I could provide them with a sample ( I could detach a mirror). The other problems would be finding the time and having to do this without benefit of a garage.

It wont work with metalic paint because the metalic wont lay right, and you must have a garage because of to much dust from wind.
