    Pictures from March 20, 2010 - Saturday Advanced Class

    Had a very good experience last Saturday. im so lucky somebody cancelled.
    But, there are only 8 of us last saturday, and it shouldve been better if the other 4 who did not make it was able to cancel early on so as the other 4 alternate people were able to attend this experience.

    come on people...a lot of them like me waited for almost a year just to attend this class...

    please, be considerate to other people...

    i hope the next Advance Class, they will be able to notify Michael if they cannot make it so as to give a chance to the alternate people.

    We want to thank those of you who came out on a gorgeous Saturday to spend the day at Meguiar's Garage - you made this a very enjoyable class!!

    Well, after going through the classroom portion and taking a quick break for lunch (and to catch up on the 12 Hours of Sebring!) it was time to head out to the garage and put new found knowledge to practical use.

    Gather 'round boys, we're gonna sand and buff some paint!


    The subtle differences between a sanding disc and a finishing disc.


    Taking a paint thickness reading to start. These test panels have been painted, sanded, buffed, sanded, buffed, polished, sanded.... you get the idea! We had in excess of 15 mils of paint on this panel when we started.


    A little D/A sanding to get things going.


    Dulling down the surface...


    ...and then compounding out the sanding marks. M105 with a So1o yellow wool pad at 1400 rpm was all that was needed to pull out the very refined and predictable 3000 grit sanding marks.


    When using the rotary buffer it's best to relax and not tense up. Don't fear the machine - you're the boss! It will respond nicely to a light touch.


    After M105 and a wool pad, we switched to M205 on a W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 foam finishing pad. We also slowed the tool down to about 1,000 rpm. Again, just a light touch will control the tool - no need to bully the poor thing! Here, just fingertip control lets the pad sit flat on the paint and do the work of removing any light marring caused by the compound and wool pad.


    Demonstration done, it's time for you guys to play!!


    D/A sanding isn't so tough, is it?




    Nice, relaxed rotary work.


    Now that's teamwork!!


    Keep those pads clean!!!


    We all love a good reflection shot.....




    Is that a mirror, or just nice flat paint? Nicely done, guys!!

        John, wasn't that you in another thread who said Porter Cable is a brand and that they make other tools, including saws?

        No, no, no....we didn't cut up a rental car, we just took a slightly different approach this time around, and it seemed to work quite well.

            Looks like a great class. I wish it was possible for the roadshow to be resurrected and offer the advanced class.

              Thanks for a great class, Michael. I learned a lot about rotary buffing and technique that, move rotary slowly instead of manhandling it. Great pizza, donuts and coffee as usual.

              Actually it would have been better to work a real car and see the outcome. Hopefully, one of these thursday I can bring my motorcycle for some meguiar loving.
