I would assume you mean wheels that are alloy, and painted/clearcoated?

Do you have any specific info on these wheels? Are they the factory supplied wheels or aftermarket? Coated in any way?

If this is a European car and the wheels are listed as "Alloy" but are painted in the typical silver paint used by Mercedes Benz, BMW, Volvo, SAAB, Jaguar, etc then you can clean them with Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner and even apply a paint cleaner like SwirlX or even Ultimate Compound, and then wax them when finished. Those wheels, while constructed of an aluminum alloy, are painted and clear coated, so it's the paint you're working on, not the aluminum alloy underneath it.

If the wheels are aftermarket, all bets are off until we know more about the specific wheel.

Always try soap and water first, no need to use a wheel cleaner if you do not have to.

Agreed, I only use a designated wheel cleaner when it is truly needed. 98% of the time I can get away with regular car wash soap and a very soft bristled brush with feathered ends.

I will also sometimes use the All Wheel Cleaner bottle and sprayer because it is a foaming sprayer. For tougher wheels (my dad's Honda Pilot's wheels can get pretty nasty sometimes) I will put the properly diluted solution in the bottle so that the soap solution will cling to the wheel and emulsify any brake dust. Then, of course, I agitate with my soft brush.

The All-Wheel Cleaner or Aluminum Wheel Cleaner would be good for a general cleaning, with a soft brush.

In addition, you can use Bug and Tar Remover, Clay, and/or a paint cleaner if needed, just as you would on paint.
