  • having a problem with UP

i have a 98 dodge ram and the side rear view mirrors are that black vinly material, the rear bumpers have these plastic/rubber pieces on them and the cowl is plastic. i applied UP to all these places and the only one UP will not dry on is the side rear view mirrors and the side rear view mirrors are the only ones i cleaned with 39, i took a lot of dirt off with 39. the first time i put it on the mirrors i was probably using to much UP and it rained and it streaked, so i cleaned them again with 39 and used little dots of product on the foam pad and it looked liked everything was good, i went inside and came back out like 15 min later and from far away they looked good but when i get close some parts of the material looked like there was no product on them, they were faded, and the parts that looked like there was product on them, when i licked my finger and wiped the product came right off and it looked like the other faded areas. when i apply UP i use a foam pad and use pressure to rub the product it and i know the product works because the cowl and the rubber/plastic pieces on the bumer dried and i didnt even use 39 to clean those areas and when i put UP on the cowl it was in direct sunlight and i had no problems with applying it and it drying because its dry and no matter how hard i push on it with my finger tips i get no finger prints, i have been private messaging mike and he hasnt been able to finger out why its not working on the mirrors, i sent mike a pic of the mirror and he said it should work on that material because others have had success on that material, so i was wondering what others think might be the problem. here is a link to the picture of the mirror that is on the truck.

also in this review by tuck91, http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...ght=lab+sample , in post 1 and 5 you can clearly see that UP works the side rear view mirrors, i just dont know why it wont stay on mine. oh and no previous dressings were applied to the mirrors. in this post to you can see that it works on side rear view mirrors with the same material my mirrors are. http://meguiarsonline.com/forums/sho...ght=lab+sample

Try cleaning the trim with APC before hand instead of M39. The M39 may be leaving behind a film of its own that is interfering with UP's ability to bond properly to the plastic.

I thought you also used a glass cleaner on these mirrors, didn't you?

i did, i tried using a eagle ones glass cleaner and then tried putting on UP and still no luck the same thing happened it wouldnt dry and some spots the product disappeared on. Mike could M39 leave behind a film on the surface?

Why not give the APC a try? I think you should leave the glass cleaner for cleaning the glass unless this is some detailing trick.

It might need multiple coats because the surface keeps soaking up the dressing. If your worried about residue from M39 then just wipe it down with water before applying the UP.

Re: having a problem with UP

i had to put on multiple coats on but when the product would finally stay on and not disappear or get absorbed by the material, it wont dry and about the glass cleaner, sometimes another polymer product stops UP from bonding well to a surface, when you get another polymer product like UQW or UQD on the surface you want to apply UP to, glass cleaner does a great job removing the polymers. next time i wash the car i will clean with 39 and wipe down with water before applying UP, its gonna be a couple of days though, working all week. quick question the next time i wash the car and UP streaks on the mirror should i just go over the mirror with more UP or should i clean with 39 and then apply UP?

Re: having a problem with UP

I had the same results applying UP to my matte black, metal B pillars. I finally ended up using Gold Class Trim Detailer on those instead, but UP on everything else.

can anybody think of a reason why UP wont dry on the mirrors which are the same material that are on most trucks and other people on this site are having success?

Has the plastic ever been treated in the 12 year life of the truck? It could be that the trim is so weathered and dry that many applications are needed to properly treat the surface.

It may take multiple applications to fully bond to the plastic. I like UP but I have also had good results with Poorboy's World Trim Restorer.

Re: having a problem with UP

i dont know if the plastic was treated, i am just borrowing the truck from the guy who is doing the audio work on my car, and he bought the truck about a year ago and he doesnt wash the truck at all, but me needing the car looking it is keeping it clean. By many applications do u mean like after it rains clean the surface with 39 and then apply UP or like just keep applying UP each day until it finally dries or each day wipe down the surface and remove the UP on the surface and apply it again?, and its not just the mirrors, there are these plastic pieces that are on the rear bumper that UP doesnt dry to and on the tailgate there is a texture surface, its not plastic and UP doesnt dry on that the only place UP does dry on is the cowl so i know the product works. the last time i applied UP it was on there for 3 days and it was sunny and warm before it rained again and UP still streaked
