Pictures from Thursday Night Open Garage - April 15th, 2010
Wow, what a crazy night! Near record turnout and more individual projects in one night than we remember ever having!! Guess you guys all had your taxes finished early, huh?
Apologies for the lack of images from all the different projects - there was just too much going on and nobody grabbed the camera until John stepped in to document the headlight restoration on the Jeep Cherokee. Thanks a ton for that work, John, you were a huge help!
Here's a taste of what we do have though, starting with horrible overspray from some paintwork done on a Celica GTS with a slick carbon fiber hood:
A little C2000 Mild Professional Clay did the trick here.
All gone!
The entire hood was clayed and then buffed with Ultimate Compound/W8207/G110v2.
These are the headlights we had to deal with on the Jeep. Yikes!
We started by damp sanding with a 3" 1000grit finishing disc on a S3HP hand pad.
This is a damp sanding process, not a true wet sanding process, so only a small amount of water was needed.
These headlights proved to be in such horrible condition that we actually gave them a hit with a 500 grit sanding disc..... take care of your headlights and don't let them get this far degraded to begin with!!! In all honesty, had we had access to some 320 grit discs we would have used them, but these items just started shipping last week and none were available for this session.
After the 500 grit we went back to the 1000 grit, the finished sanding with 3000 grit.
Once we finished sanding we opted to use the wool pad and PlastX from our consumer Headlight Restoration Kit. The sanding/finishing discs and hand pad used previously are all available seperately and the consumer headlight kit is very easy to use. Combining the two means anyone can clean up even the worst headlights even by hand and with just a common drill.
We ran the drill at it's max speed and with moderate pressure, taking time to thoroughly work every square inch of the headlight lens.
Driver's side done, passenger side in current state of neglect. Quite a difference!
We went to correct the other lens too, but something else was just crying for attention - that bumper was a disaster! A light but vigorous application of Ultimate Protectant made all the difference here!
