Meguiar's Quik Tips Video Series - Using the Right Wheel Cleaner

After viewing the video clip you can scroll down for a step by step refresher, complete with still images shot during the filming of the video.

Please keep in mind that this video, and the others in the series, are not designed to be definitive how to guides but rather, as the name implies, Quik Tips that address the most common questions and mistakes associated with each topic.

Whether your car has custom wheels or factory wheels, keeping them clean is an important part of the overall appearance of your car. With all the wheel cleaners available, and with all the wheel finishes available, choosing the right wheel cleaner can be confusing.

Wheel manufacturers use a variety of materials to achieve different looks and choosing the wrong wheel cleaner could damage your wheels. Meguiar's offers 3 wheel cleaners designed to be safe and effective on each wheel type.

Our Aluminum Wheel Cleaner is made to be safe on delicate uncoated polished aluminum and anodized wheels. If your wheels are bare, high polished aluminum or have an anodized coating (such as those described as being "black chrome") then this is the wheel cleaner you should choose.

Our All Wheel Cleaner is designed specifically for all "Factory Coated" wheels. If the wheels on your car are the ones that came from the factory as original equipment then you would choose All Wheel Cleaner.

Finally, our Chrome Wheel Cleaner is the perfect choice for keeping those Chrome Wheels looking their best. But make sure you have a true chrome wheel, and not a bare, highly polished aluminum wheel - these can look like chrome but are far more delicate and can be stained by using this product on them. Again, Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner should only be used on true chrome wheels.

To clean your wheels properly, spray the appropriate wheel cleaner liberally onto a cool wheel and allow the foaming cleansers to penetrate and dissolve dirt for up to 15 seconds. You can spray the wheels with water first to ensure that they're cool if need be. Also, make sure to only work on one wheel at a time from start to finish.

Always begin spraying from the bottom of the wheel and work your way up. This way you avoid having concentrated cleaner running down the face of the wheel, which could lead to streaking in rare cases.

For extremely dirty wheels, it may be necessary to use a premium wheel brush or dedicated wash mitt to help loosen stubborn brake dust.

Rinse the wheel thoroughly with plenty of water before moving on the next wheel, but don't forget to dry your wheels to minimize the chance of water spots.

Now repeat this process on your other wheels. When done right, there is nothing better than a clean set of wheels on a clean car!

I made a video on how to detail wheels, wheel wells and tires, featuring Meguiar's Super Degreaser and Wheel Brightener.

My apologies for the bad narration.

              Hi,

How can I found out if my Rims are coated or not?

              Thanks

OEM factory wheels are almost always coated in some way - either painted like the typical European silver wheels, or clear coated over polished aluminum. If you have shiny aluminum wheels (the silver painted ones are pretty obvious!) but aren't sure if they're clear coated or bare polished, do this:

Wash and dry the wheel thoroughly, or use a quick detail spray and clean towel to remove any light surface dust. Take a small amount of metal polish such as Hot Rims Mag & Aluminum Polish on a clean applicator pad and rub it on the wheel with moderate pressure. If the finish is bare aluminum the applicator will turn black as soot in a few seconds. If coated there will be no change in the appearance of the applicator other than the polish itself being spread through it.

If you do have bare high polished aluminum wheels then you have a very delicate and high maintenance finish that needs extra care when cleaning. Stay with the Hot Rims Aluminum Wheel Cleaner or even soap and water for cleaning. Never use Chrome Wheel Cleaner on a polished aluminum wheel as it will instantly stain the finish.
