  • Convertible and Cabriolet Cleaner G2016 and weatherproof G2112

Hi all, I am new to Meguiars and newbie in caring a convertible. I bought a BMW Z3 recently and I decide to clean+care the top myself.

I bought Meguiars Convertible and Cabriolet Cleaner G2016 and weatherproof G2112. Can't wait to get started, but I decide to read through some how-to articles first.

However I could not find the exact articles that talk about the above 2 products. I could only find some related articles like the similar products in the marine line.

Could someone please point me to the correct direction on how to use Convertible and Cabriolet Cleaner G2016 and weatherproof G2112 or which article i should refer to? Many thanks!!

These two products are International Market only products for Meguiars - at least as of now - so you won't find much info existing about them here on MOL.

However we can help you out with a few things.

Both products are suitable for all types of convertible tops, from cloth to canvas to mohair to vinyl, and they're actually quite easy to use. You want to start by at least rinsing the roof off with water to remove any loose contaminants. With the roof still wet, spray some of the G2016 cleaner onto an area roughly 2' x 2' (60cm x 60cm) and agitate it lightly with a soft bristle brush. Using terry cloth is fine on a vinyl top but it could lint off onto a canvas or cloth top, so best to avoid terry cloth for those. Work around the top in small areas like this until you've cleaned the whole top. Now thoroughly rinse the top and then wash and dry the car as you normally would.

Once the top has dried completely, and that is important for the next step, you can apply the protectant. It is important to work in a well ventilated area since you are working with an aerosol product here, but you also want to be as sheltered from the wind as possible. Working in an open garage should give you the best of both worlds. It is also helpful to cover some of the adjacent areas of the car before doing this - release the top from the windshield header and open it just a bit so that you can catch a couple of large towels or even an old sheet between the windshield header and top, then close the top again to secure it. This will keep over spray from getting on the windshield. Do the same with towels over the side windows and, depending on how the rear of the top functions, do the same there as well. Some cars release the base of the back of the roof (Nissan 350Z, Chrysler Crossfire, etc) while others are permanently affixed and drop down from that edge (Mazda MX-5 Miata, etc). How your roof works will determine the best way to secure towels or another sheet to cover the rear of the vehicle against overspray. The rear window can be masked off with painters tape, or tape a couple of small towels over it. All of this covering up is merely to avoid clean up later - getting any overspray onto the paint will not hurt anything, but you will need to wipe off all those panels if it does happen.

Now that everything is masked/protected you can start spraying the protectant on. Again, spray onto the same size area as noted above, and overlap your strokes. Use the same type of motions you would use when spray painting - smooth, even, overlapping strokes with the can held roughly 12" (30cm) from the surface. Don't soak the surface, but do a couple of light to moderate coats. When the product is first sprayed on it may look a bit uneven, but it will even out as it dries. It does dry pretty quickly, but do allow it to dry fully before putting the top down.

      thanks michael!

after cleaning with the Cleaner and rinse with water and wait for it to dry, it seems there are many small little "dust" in the air stick onto the roof, and it makes the black roof covered with lots of small white little "hair" on close look. is there any good way to remove those?

A lint roller works great for this:

Or you could just roll some wide masking tape around your hand, sticky side out, and use it to pick up the dust/lint/etc

On my own canvas convertible top I use a large lint roller on a regular basis, just to keep it free from dust and other fallout after sitting in the parking lot for a day.

So are those 2 products available in the U.S.? I have a cloth convertible top and am wondering what's best to clean and then protect it with. These products seem to be the ticket, but I thought I read somewhere on MOL that you guys don't offer anything for cloth tops?

Unfortunately these products are currently only available outside the US. Shack, since you're in Sheboygan there must be a marina or two near you. We make a canvas cleaner in our Marine Line, M71, that works wonders on canvas tops. Unfortunately our M72 Canvas Protectant was recently discontinued but you might still be able to find some locally in stock.

sorry i brought this post up again after a few months
as after using these 2 products, i find them very useful
and I just want to clarify

-if the top has no obvious dirt, do i need to clean it with the cleaner then applied weatherproof, say monthly? or could i just wash it with water ?

-if at certain time, only a small part of the top is dirty and I clean that part with the cleaner, do i need to apply protectant just for that part?
