Meguiar's Quik Tips Video Series - Removing Swirls

NOTE: Since this video was produced we have added Ultimate Polish to our lineup. Everything you see in this video and the rest of the post can be done with Ultimate Polish, too, using the same techniques. Keep in mind, however, that Ultimate Polish is a very light duty cleaner/polish and is most commonly used following an application of Ultimate Compound. Used in this was, Ultimate Polish will enhance the gloss of any finish, but used on it's own it can remove very light swirls from your paint finish.

After viewing the video clip you can scroll down for a step by step refresher, complete with still images shot during the filming of the video.

Please keep in mind that this video, and the others in the series, are not designed to be definitive how to guides but rather, as the name implies, Quik Tips that address the most common questions and mistakes associated with each topic.

Regardless of whether or not you’re a car guy, swirl marks are a problem for everyone. Lets face it, there’s nothing attractive about a car with swirls. They can be isolated or widespread and removing them is crucial to getting your car looking it's absolute best.

To remove swirls Meguiar's developed Ultimate Compound and SwirlX swirl remover - both are quick yet safe solutions for use by hand, orbital buffer, or even our G110v2 Dual Action Polisher.

Begin by washing and drying your car thoroughly and, if needed, clay your car using our Smooth Surface Clay Kit.

If you are working by hand, apply either Ultimate Compound or SwirlX swirl remover with a foam applicator and work one section at a time with overlapping strokes.

There is no need to let either of these products dry; simply wipe them off using our Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel, turning to a clean section for your final wipe.

If you are using our Dual Action Polisher we recommend using our yellow W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 Foam Polishing Pad. Simply attach the foam polishing pad and set the speed to approximately 4.5 - 5. Apply Ultimate Compound or SwirlX directly to the pad and place the pad flat on the paint.

Turn the machine on and begin buffing with moderate pressure in an overlapping pattern while keeping the pad flat against the paint at all times. Work a small section at a time, applying additional SwirlX as needed until all swirls have been removed.

Remove the product residue using our Supreme Shine Microfiber Towel.

There you have it, a swirl free finish ready for your favorite Meguiar's polish or wax. (We've only corrected the bottom half of the panel in the image below in order to show a distinct before/after difference)

I don't understand, is that last picture polished or not? It looks like it has a lot of swirls to me...

It's a half and half; typically we tape off a portion of the panel and polish out one section, then we remove the tape so you can dramatically see the before and after side by side. Look at the panel in the picture - yes, the upper half is horribly swirled but the lower half is swirl free after going through the buffing process.

Funny how we get use to looking at something one way only. I was thinking the same thing till I realized the tape line was horizontal v vertical.

Was that a viewer test Mike? LOL

I'm having trouble removing swirl marks with my DA using M205 with the yellow polishing pad. instead of removing them it seems like it puts them in. I've tried to follow up with mirror glaze swirl remover but I cant get them to disapear.

What kind of car are you working on, how bad are the swirls?

M205 is generally a very light duty final finishing polish, so even with a polishing pad instead of a finishing pad it might not be aggressive to accomplish the task. The hardness of the paint and the level of swirls will play a large role here as well. But there's no way in the world that M205 or a polishing pad (assuming it's clean, of course) will put new swirls into the paint. Any chance you can get us a picture or two of what you're seeing?

I'm working on my 07 Jag, The pads that I'm using came strait out of the bag. maybe if I use the finishing pad with the same polish I might get better results.

Re: Meguiar's Quik Tips Video Series - Removing Swirls

If you're using a polishing pad with M205 and that's not removing your existing swirls, then moving to a finishing pad isn't going to help. You'd just be getting less aggressive when it sounds like you need to get more aggressive. We would suggest using Ultimate Compound on the polishing pad at speed 5 and with moderate pressure to remove the swirls, then optionally using M205 on the finishing pad at a slower speed and less pressure to further refine the finish prior to waxing. We say "optionally" because you may not need a step between Ultimate Compound and wax, or you may want to shoot for a higher level of gloss.

By ultimate are yout talking about M105 or the actual ultimate compound? I get so confused with meguiars products because there are so many out on the market. I just try to stick with the mirror glaze line to make it more easier.

Nope, we flat out said Ultimate Compound, not M105. We know it can be confusing (heck, we refer to our product display in our training room as the "wall of confusion"!!!) but you have to be the first person to say the Mirror Glaze line is actually less confusing for you!! That normally puts people's heads into a real spin cycle!

You'll find that in the vast majority of cases when dealing with pretty basic swirl removal, Ultimate Compound is much more user friendly on a DA buffer than M105 is, and still cuts amazingly well.

On the other hand, Mirror Glaze line of compound/polish bottle has a scale from 1 to 10 indicates the relative level of cut. This really help to differentiate among Mirror Glaze line of products. On www.meguiars.com, I found those product benefits icons helpful. Hopefully Meguiars put them onto the product bottle just like the cut level indicator on Mirror Glaze line. My 2 cents. Thanks.

Yes, that is correct. Remember though - only the wax should be allowed to dry on the surface before wiping off.
