When is it necessary to use a cutting compound?

Just what the title says...

Is it necessary to use a compound like Meg Ultra Cut? Or is this the kind of thing that only professional detailers would worry about?

Well, it is necessary if the paint is damaged enough (or sanded enough), or hard enough to need it.

Anyone can worry about it, but most Average Joe's arent that bothered.

M105 Ultra Cut Compound was developed for use with a high speed rotary buffer and a wool cutting pad to remove sanding marks from paint. About the only thing more aggressive than M105/wool pad/rotary buffer is the sanding itself. For typical swirl removal, it's generally overkill. Consider that this is the most powerful and aggressive compound we make, that it's only been on the market for 2 1/2 years, and that people were able to remove swirls before it was introduced and you get the idea that for most detailing jobs it's most like far more cut than you need.

People seem to have a natural tendency to grab the biggest hammer they can find, so to speak, thinking they'll get the job done faster. But a really good detailer takes the time to hone and refine his skill level in order to get the job done better - not just faster.

...it's the skill and not the tool that counts the most!
