Extending Time to edit a post

Right now we get 5 minutes. Could this be increased to 10 minutes. I've found 5 minutes has stumped me on a number of occasions. Sometimes you need a minute or two to reflect on what you just posted.

I agree. After submitting a post recently, I decided to add a picture to illustrate my point. By the time I found the picture, inserted the link in the post and hit the submit button time had expired to edit. Another 5 minutes would have helped. Personally, I don't see why there has to be a time limit on editing. Sometimes spelling or grammar errors aren't apparent immediately, but jump out at you after you've read the post a few times.

I agree with both of the Bills. If there has to be a time limit on editing posts, 10-15 minutes gives a little more flexibility. Don't know if it's possible but eliminating the time limit altogether in For Sale or Trade would let the offeror update a list of available products without posting further down in the thread.

Add my name to the list. Several times I have posted and then wanted to add/delete subject matter,or a picture.

Bill, you should create a poll for this question, I agree its should be more time or unlimited ( if impossible)

I think a poll is a good idea, but I think it should be left up to the admins.

The program may not give them the flexibility to adjust the time. If it does there may only be a limited number of choices. ie. 5 minutes, 15 minutes unlimited. The poll should reflect the available options.

I think a poll would be a good idea though. The forum after all, is for the users. We should be able to have some input on what we'd like to see.

Honestly, I'm curious why there is a limit at all. Did something happen in the past that made this a requirement on the forum?

If memory serves. There was a incident in the past. Therefore the consensus was to give editing a time limit. That is the way I remember it.

This has been talked about in the past. One of the problems is peoples stories will change after someone else replies. Sometimes people will re-do a post to the point where it makes no sense at all actually.

Exactly! As the past Super Mod of this site, I can not tell you how many times we have had to deal with people who have abused the edit function... . Is it for nefarious reasons or just plain narcissism, their actions have necessitated this shorter editing time frame. The ones this hurts the most are the diligent people who just want to go in and correct simple spelling and grammatical errors.... As such, this is a case where a few have ruined it for the majority... .

For example, call them Arm Chair Bandits or Keyboard Commandos, or whatever, they come on to site, posting information they have amassed from reading posts from MOL and other sites and then portray themselves as an authority without any real actual experience themselves, misleading people new to detailing and new to Meguiar’s Online... As a result, many people will post to the thread correcting their incorrect misinformation which often leads to a dispute as the original poster now feels foolish for posting such nonsense. The original poster then goes back to his incorrect post and edits his or her statements which then mess up subsequent posts, making the thread confusing and incoherent. Again in may be accidental or it may be for nefarious or narcissistic reasons, but their actions make all of us suffer as a result. The whole goal is to keep the information presented on MOL as accurate and factual so that people can get the most out of their Meguiar's products!

With the above said, I am not criticizing those individuals who have a history of mostly cutting and pasting info or posting links as that info, while not their own, is still helpful to the beginner detailer who may need to learn the basics and now have links with information they can now read.

While the 1 minute edit time is pretty brief, (I would prefer it is moved to 5-10 minutes), there are reasons why it was necessitated. Mistakes happen and if there are any accidental errors, any of the Mods or the Admin, I am sure, would be more than happy to go in a fix the mistakes for you. Just send them a PM!

All the above points are valid. It's just that the 5 minute time is still a little bit short for legitimate edits. I think 10 minutes would make for a nicer balance.

We are also firm believers that Internet discussion forums are conversations, and in a real conversation you can not "un-say" something. We also like to keep our MOL members happy, and this isn't the first time a discussion has come up asking for the 5 minute limit to be extended to 10 minutes.

And so it is done. You now have 10 minutes to edit your responses, but we still hope you'll make use of the "Preview Post" button and review your post before releasing it to the world.

We also like to keep our MOL members happy, and this isn't the first time a discussion has come up asking for the 5 minute limit to be extended to 10 minutes.
