  • Use NXT spray wax and clay?

    Hello!

Soon time to go over the car with the clay for the first time! I have a bottle of NXT spray wax would you recommend me to use it? Guessing that UQD or QD is better, but since I already have a bottle of spray wax so thought I check with you!

    Thanks!

    /Björn

Spray waxes are not suitable for clay lube. You really should stay with Quik Detailer or Last Touch diluted 1:1 with water for this purpose. UQD is actually too slick for the clay to work to its full effectiveness.

You could also try a car-soap dilution (generally I use 1:1 soap/water) if you don't have anything else to use.

Do not use spray wax though.

Or make a dilution of water and car-soap in a spray bottle like I said . It works just as well and is usually cheaper than using QD as a clay lube.

The problem though is that the car soap will degrade the clay. In shop environments where claybars are being used quickly, there is no harm as the clay is being used quickly and no time for the clay to degrade. However, the average consumer should use Meguiars recommended products as they will not degrade the clay.

I've never had a problem with that happening using PH balanced soaps. I would imagine if you use soaps that have chemical cleaners/degreasers within it it would be a problem though.

I'm not saying it doesn't by any means, but I'm just saying that I've never experienced that. Your experiences could be different for sure.

There was a thread on here where someone used car shampoo and water as a clay lube, then pulled the car out into the sun and there was all sorts of marring and swirls.

I never understood why anyone would go this route, just pick up a gallon of Last Touch and dilute 1:1 and you have quite a bit of clay lube.

Marring would only be a result of an improper dilution ratio, using a soap with poor lubricity or claybarring improperly.

Using soap as a clay lube isn't an uncommon practice by any means and it can be done without damage to the surface of the vehicle.

Using a quick detailer is certainly a more fail-safe way to do it though, and depending on what quick-detailer you use you can cut that with water to varying degrees. It's just a matter of trial and error to see how much lubricity you need on the surface for your clay to not "grab" while you're going over the surface.

stupid question here (go figure...) but can i dilute some m135 to work??? i have used m135 straight up, but now that i hear UQD is too thick, i assume m135 is as well???

Check your work after you clay to see if it picked up the particles imbeded in the paint. If it didn't clean it up due to being too slick then try to cut it with a bit of water (start with 75% of the QD and 25% water to start and keep cutting as necessary until you find the proper lubrication you need for the clay to work properly). It's important to not try and force the clay to clean the surface...you want it to "just work".

well, i have used the m135 as lube before and to ME it seemed to work....but i am not a pro like a lot of you, so maybe i am missing something...it seems to remove particles, but it might not be removing as much as it could be.

A couple of really stupid qusetions here...

                          1. I know what swirls are but explain marbling.
                          2. With a black car, 2010, can you runin the paint with any of these products by using them wrong?
                          3. Can someone outline what steps to take in repairing some of the issues associated with appying too much wax or buffing before it dries or any other issues new guys do to screw up the process.
                          4. Can you use one clay bar or two different car of different colors?
                          5. Is there some holy grail that provide insight, before you start, as to when you should use the different products like which wax on what surface or can you use detailer immeadiately after waxing to remove some of the dust or use clay bar to repair mistakes with improper applied product. (Of course some or all of these could be wrong)

                          Just thinking.....
