  • Hot Wheel cleaner damaged my caliper paint

I posted this on myg37.com and they told me to come here for assistance.

I bought Hot Shine Wheel Cleaner because of it's great reviews and "safe on all wheels."

After spraying on the wheels and letting sit 5 minutes before rinsing off, the paint on all of my calipers on my new 2010 g37 coupe have been dissolved. Now my calipers have blotches of dull iron in the spots that were in direct contact with your wheel cleaner. Instead of the original shiny metallic paint the factory uses for their calipers.

If there are any moderators or technicians here I could take pictures and show you the results of the wheel treatment. Sure the brake dust was easy to remove but at what cost?

I always use your other products, clay bar kits, nxt 2.0, plastix, car wash, tire shine, and quik interior and exterior detailers and this is the first time I am truly disappointed especially since the car is only 2 months old and already in need of a paint job for the calipers.

    Thanks.

Were the calipers hot when you applied the cleaner?

I assume you are referring to G9524 Hot Rims Cool Care All Wheel Cleaner.

        If so:
You are supposed to apply the product to a cool wet wheel (one at a time), allow the product to penetrate for 15 seconds (dirty wheels may require agitation), then rinse thoroughly. If this isn't enough to get them clean you can follow with a second application.

Sorry to hear about your calipers.

the calipers and rotors were cool, especially since i rinsed with cold water first before applying the wheel cleaner and had not used the car an hour prior.

I did one at a time and didn't notice the damage until i took it for a spin to dry them off after then it was immediately noticeable.

I will take pics and upload it sometime today or tomorrow.

Re: Hot Wheel cleaner damaged my caliper paint

We are very sorry to hear about this issue with this product on your factory brake calipers. We're assuming you used the Hot Rims All Wheel Cleaner in the purple bottle and not the Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner in the red bottle, right?

It seems that more and more manufacturers are finishing their calipers with some very delicate surface treatment, making it quite difficult to avoid overspray of any wheel cleaner onto them. We know that Chevrolet made a rolling change to the calipers on the Z06 Corvette - they used to be able to stand up to even our Hot Rims Chrome Wheel Cleaner ( our most potent wheel cleaner) when used on the factory chrome wheels on that car. But not any more. So that wheel cleaner is fine for the wheels themselves, but not the calipers any longer.

As for your calipers, we would ask that contact our Customer Care Center directly at 800-347-5700 - the person you talk to will ask that you email images of the damage to them, and they will pass along your contact info to our Quality Assurance Manager. Please call between 6:00AM - 5:00PM Pacific Time and mention that you have posted this to the forum and that I asked you to call.

Any pictures of a car, or yours before, showing what they look like with the paint in good shape?

                What color is the paint?

you also stated that you let the wheel cleaner sit on the wheels for five min? the best and corect way is to insure wheels are cool to the touch. rinse one wheel at a time apply corect wheel cleaner from bottom to the top of the wheel, agitate and rinse. repeat this on the other three wheels .

I have an M35X and I use another wheel cleaner safe on everything P21S. I noticed over time that the calipers have gotten to look like your in a short anount of time. it not the cleaner as much as the finish IMO from first hand experience.

Looks like your calipers were painted with cheap spray paint.

Also, Nissan uses cheap metals in their brakes and brake calipers, not really surprising.
