Re: Recommended rotary vs cheap rotary

Anything electrical from HF, test it out immediately and return if it has issues. I bought the on/off rotary about a year ago and took back the first one and went through three more testing in the store. All of them sounded like the bearings were totally shot, but it still works, so who knows.

I'm not sure buying a good brand used is a safe plan. Some heavy use detailers get a good idea after wearing a few out just how long they last, and sell them a few weeks before they go toes up on ebay or CL. They might still have a year or more of home use left in them, but still a very poor overall value.

The HF Rotary I bought for $39. It is adjustable from 400 RPM up to 2550. It's marked as 200 to 3000 but an associate said they tested it and it never got up that high. It doesn't bog down at speed and saved me a ton of money I can spend on pads and other detailing needs. here is the info they sent me.

Hello everyone...I am in the market for a new rotary buffer, my ATD $99.95 unit lasted 5 years and served me well but the variable speed dial went south. I am debating between the new Dewalt 849xp and the makita 9227cx3. I would appreciate any opinions and comments.

We use the DeWalt 849s here in the garage at work - they are very stout workhorses that will give you years of trouble free use. They may not be the quietest or lightest tool, but they are truly excellent. The Makita 9227 has a soft start feature, runs down to a slower speed (600 vs 1000 rpm if memory serves) and is a bit lighter and quieter. Quite often the Makita can be found for less money than the DeWalt as well. You can't go wrong with either tool though.

It may well be a generic brand that is actually built by a major player in the industry. Porter cable has a rotary buffer, model 7428, that can usually be found under $100 as well. Hitachi has a rotary that is incredibly quiet and Amazon is selling it for around $175. Amazon also has a Black & Decker rotary for $57 but they list the weight at 9.7lbs for the unit - that's either a typo or one heck of a heavy tool! And then there's the Flex PE14-2-150; super quiet, very lightweight, but also the most expensive of the tools mentioned here with a price in excess of $350.

Handles vary on these tools; some come with a stick handle while the Makita and Hitachi come with a bale handle. And some people prefer to use no handle at all on their buffers, rotary or DA.

Weight should be a consideration when purchasing a rotary as a heavy one can become very tiring during the course of a detailing project. Speed settings are much more important on the low end than on the high end. You're never going to spin one faster than 2000 rpm anyway (at least you really shouldn't) so if Buffer "A" will go up to 2550 rpm and Buffer "B" will spin to 3000 rpm is immaterial. But if Buffer "A" will run as slow as 600 rpm but Buffer "B" will only drop down to 1250 rpm, you might want to steer clear of "B", regardless of price, weight, handle, etc.
