  • M83 vs M105 with M205

Recently I took my dark blue 2001 Lexus LS into a detail shop and the detailer used a rotary buffer and removed all the fine scratches using M85 followed by M26. The car looked better than new when it was done.

In a few months I know it will need another buffing since it sits outside and as a result of the the repeated hand washings and other harsh elements the fine scraches will most likely reappear. I would prefer to do the buffing myself next time and use my DA polisher. Should I purchase the M83 and M205 and use those in combination or M105 (which is now made for the DA polisher) and M205? When I read about the agressive cut level of M105 I get concerned that it may burn the clear coat.

I have never used any of these products before so any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.

For use with a DA polisher you should be fine with SwirlX and Ultimate Compound. If you develop really serious defects then you may step up to M105/ M205 combo but do a test spot first to see that your paint reacts properly to this treatment. Some soft surfaces don't take it well.

I regularly use M83 on scratches that don't need the strength of M105. If you're careful with your washing techniques over tiime you may not need to go with 105. But, as with every car, it'll depend on how hard the clearcoat is on your Lexus.

If you're going to be maintaining the vehicle yourself you'll find Ultimate Compound is much more forgiving on a D/A than M105 and it still has the power to correct moderate to pretty bad defects. For the price of single bottle of M105 you could pick up a bottle of UC and a bottle of SwirlX - use the SwirlX as a follow up to refine the finish further after correction with UC. Of course, M205 is darn hard to beat as a final finishing polish as it can add great clarity to a finish.

At our last Thursday Night Open Garage we worked on a Lexus SC430 using nothing more than a G110v2, W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pad and Ultimate Compound to correct the swirls and water spots. We followed with M206 on a W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 finishing pad and the owner, Frank, was amazed at the outcome - not only how fantastic it looked but how easy it was to achieve such a finish. You can see the write up from that evening here, complete with before, during and after images of the car.

I took Michael's advice and purchased the Ultimate Compound and SwirlX along with M205. I also purchased the new backing plate for my Porter Cable D/A polisher that works with the new W8207 Soft Buff 2.0 polishing pad the W9207 Soft Buff 2.0 finishing pad, which I also purchased. Since I just had the car professionally buffed I went ahead and only tried the M205 which I applied with the new W9207 finishing pad. All I can say is Wow! What a shine!

Yeah, shouldnt need the stronger products very much if you are taking good care of things.

You just learned the value of doing a test spot. No need to use a product that is too aggressive for your needs.

lexus982000 emailed pictures of his car to me after giving it the M205 treatment. Hard to believe this car is 9 years old!!!

Hope you don't mind us posting your pictures here for the world to see - we're happy to take them down if you don't want them here.
