  • First Time Use - Water Magnet

After years of using an absorber to drying cars i decided to pickup a water magnet with my last order from autogeek.

I have so far never been disappointed with a meguiars product and after today, that still stands.

Used it for the first time today and i must say it beats the absorber in every aspect.

Its size is 3-4x that of the absorber as well as softer. Incredible absorption, I was able to dry my wife's car without wringing it out once.

Looks like i'll need to pickup a few more with my next order.

This is all i'll be using from now on!

Not sure if you washed it before you used it, but I have found as well as heard from others that washing it first makes it absorb better.

Glad to see that you had a good experience with it.

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

    I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
    Remove swirls my friends.

+2. It will pick up more after you wash it.

My water magnet simply pushes water around and absorbs diddly... A better product with a 70/30 blend is chemicals guys blue monster towels... Hands down the best most absorbent towel I have tried... Next on the list is the guzzler from cobra, hopefully I can remember to include it on the next order...
On that note the Marine/tv whammy is also a joke... Lint everywhere and yes from a suede shammy

I'm glad I read to wash it, I have used it a few times without washing it. I will make sure I toss it in the machine before I use it again.

Nothing special, some people say liquid detergent, but I don't think that's necessary.

I would avoid super hot water, stick to warm or cold water (it's not dirty, so obviously no stains to get out).

Re: First Time Use - Water Magnet

You will get maximum results with the Water Magnet if you wash and dry it before first use, and following every use thereafter. Warm wash, cold rinse, liquid laundry detergent, then dry at low heat and skip any fabric softener or dryer sheets. At home I dry all my microfibers on the "fluff" setting which means they're often not fully dry after a first cycle so I sometimes run them through again. It all depends on how many towels and pads I run in a single load though.

We must say it's a bit surprising to hear that not all of you are washing and drying your Water Magnets after every use. You should do so, and if you're using a microfiber wash mitt that should be washed regularly as well. Again, every time I wash my own car and dry with a Water Magnet or two they end up in the laundry hamper with the rest of my Supreme Shines, Ultimate Wipes and any pads I may have used. Once I've got a reasonably sized load together they all go in together. Since I tend to wipe down my daily driver and my wife's car with UQD/M135 and a couple of Supreme Shines on a daily basis I collect up a bunch of towels every week anyway. Of course, since it so rarely rains here in SoCal I may go a couple of months without having to do a full wash of either car, so I'm not adding Water Magnets to the mix all that often, but they are always washed between uses.

Re: First Time Use - Water Magnet

Thanks for the advice Mike. I only hang my microfiber wash mitt and water magnets to dry after each wash. I probably put them in the washer/dryer after about 15 car washes or if there's a microfiber towel load I have to do. I didn't know that it would be better for them to be washed thoroughly after each use. Did my process have any adverse results?

I will start doing your method from now on.

Nothing terrible, no, but you're probably not getting the most out of the mitt and towel if you're not washing them after every use. By the way, I've got Water Magnets at home that are several years old and/or have been used with UQW/D156 when drying on multiple occasions, they've been machine washed and dried dozens of times and they still work great.

My oldest water magnet was rarely washed and it really looks old and discolored. It has also lost its absorbency power. Do you think it's because I didn't wash it regularly or it just comes with age? The absorbency didn't seem to change in your case.

BTW, I love my water magnets!

I guess I will start washing my water magnet and wash mitts after every use, I have been in the habit of just wringing them out really well since they never appear to be dirty...just wet.

I wash all my MF cloths, Megs SS, Megs WM, Megs mf wash mitt, Megs foam applicators in Micro Restore soap after each wash/detail....then hang to dry.
My WM hardly gets wet after I blast my vehicles dry with the leaf blower....I just got into a habit of washing all my MF items regardless.

All my Megs MF items all work like new ....I highly recommend http://www.autogeek.net/mideco128oz.html
