That first picture was AFTER washing the truck! It is very cold here at the moment and the water would not dry and would only smear around the paint. The lines you see are water/towel smears. They would come off easily, but what ever they used on the roads this year, really messed up the paint! The other marks are from water spots, something I rarely get...so again, it must have been something used on the roads this past winter...

Hey Brian,

Yes, I am strongly suggesting to use the correct Meguiar's plates. I can not say that all other backing plates will not work, they will, but my Mirka plate did put a lot of wear on the pad's mating surface. These pads stick like glue to the Velcro, and I surmise that the long fingered Velcro sticks a little too much....

Have you used it his on fiberglass or gelcoat yet Tim?

I have several boat corrections coming up soon and I have a feeling this system will be great for the initial detail and future touch up details.

I service a black Malibu Wake Setter bi weekly in the warmer months, and its a nightmare fighting off those hard water spots.

Hi, Tim. Thanks for the review! Two questions:

1) How do you think the pads would work with Ultimate Compound or M205?

2) For those of us who do not have access to compressed air, should we stay away from these pads?

The discs actually work quite well with M105/M205 but with a couple of differences: With M105 you're bound to get some dusting; how much will depend on a lot of variables, of course, but with D300 there is virtually zero dust (except in some rare cases) and wipe off is almost always a piece of cake. With M205, of course, you're giving up the wax contained in D301 so you will have to do another step.

A good pad conditioning brush works great. The Toyota Corolla and Mercedes SL55 AMG mentioned in our introductory post were both corrected using nothing but this system and the pads were cleaned with just a brush as there was no compressed available at the two sites. In the case of the AMG two cutting discs were used for the entire project, one finishing disc (plus a 3.37" disc of each size for the tighter areas. The Corolla was done with just one of disc each. It should be noted that brushing of the discs was done after every section pass, not every panel, and only for the cutting disc. The finishing disc was brushed only a couple of times since a little of the finishing wax goes a long way.

Does the compressed air technique only apply if you are using the same pad for cutting and polishing?You wouldn't use the same pad for cutting and polishing - they may both be microfiber pads, but they are quite different from one another; foam density, foam thickness, microfiber density, etc

In the video they recommended compressed air, the brush or the pad washer.Yes, and all three work great. Even the dampness picked up by using the pad washer (plain water only, don't add any cleaning solution to it) does not negatively impact the compounding step.

The system works great on gel coat! Give it a shot, we expect you'll be very pleased.

Yes, it truly is! Tim has that knack for looking at things a little differently at times and the approach of initially testing the pads with a different liquid....

I figured that since distribution of new products can be difficult, especially depending upon where you live, that I wanted to test the new pads with products people already have.

....just confirms that.

Great review Tim!! This is the one I have been waiting for. I like the fact that you also tried other products with the MF pads. Just goes to show that the "old dog" as you say can "think outside the box", which is how we all learn, by experimentation.

The hood of you truck looks awesome. At first I was looking and said to myself, "whoa!!" LOL It turned out great using the new system. Don't ya just hate when the water freezes before you can dry?

Have you tried D151 yet with the pads to see if it performs with that as well since it's supposed to be SMAT as well and it has wax in it too?
