  • I'm way too excited!

I just ordered a Porter Cable (Meg's DA is out of stock and i'm too impatient) I got 2 orange pads, two grey and a white pad. This will be my first time using a DA. Any tips?? Is it pretty hard to ruin my paint using the PC? Is there anything else I may need to order to help? I'm wanting to detail my car and remove light swirls. I have Megs swirlx. ntx wax, deep crystal and clay kit.
Am i obsessed?? A car is the second biggest financial investment for most people, why not keep it looking better than new?

Well, I imagine if you throw it at the car, the paint may chip easily.

Take a look at the following link, a great write up on the basics of using a Dual Action Polisher:

        Re: I'm way too excited!

The above link, provided by Nick, will take you to the great article about DA polishing.

It looks like you have everything to remove light swirls and restore show car shine.

After washing and claying your car I would start a test spot with a white polishing pad and SwirlX. If not removing 100% swirls then orange light cutting pad with SwirlX again should do the job.

You're gonna need more polishing pads in the future. For now just clean it frequently "on the fly" with a towel.

Ok thanks guys. Just taking some opinions. Does anyone want to tell me thier product step process? Or what would be best for me, my cars are silver and white.

            I would go with....

            1) Wash
            2) Clay
            3) Swirlx or Ultimate Compound depending on paint condition; do a test spot to find out
            4) Deep Crystal Polish which is an optional step
            5) NXT Tech Wax 2.0

                    Nicholas,
Your article shows the black pad being used for both polishing and waxing. Would the yellow pad ever be used for polishing with something like Ultimate Polish?
                    Thank you.

Yellow polishing pad is of course more aggressive than black finishing pad which has minimal paint cutting ability.

If you work with paint cleaners or cleaner polishes and would like to perform some paint correction (remove some paint) then yellow polishing pad would be the right one.

But if you buff surface for high gloss or apply wax then black finishing pad is your right one. It can be used with cleaner polishes, pure polishes and all waxes.

Going back to your question: Ultimate Polish is a cleaner polish so it can be used with either yellow polishing pad or black finishing pad. Yellow pad will provide paint cleaning and polishing ability but black pad only polishing action (minimal cutting ability).

If you want to correct some defects (scratches, swirls, water spots, oxidation) then it requires paint removal.

                          Re: I'm way too excited!

Orange is light cutting pad - medium to light defect removal, suitable for SwirlX,

White is polishing pad - light defect removal and polishing, suitable for SwirlX as well but offers less cut,

Gray is finishing pad - no defect removal, no cut, suitable for pure polishes like Deep Crystal Polish,

Red is ultra soft pad - wax and sealant applications, suitable for Next Tech Wax 2.0 .

Here's the reference chart for Lake Country buffing pads:

                            Re: I'm way too excited!

Here is a link to an older thread (G100 even, the polisher before the G110):

I like the pictures that show the directions and how to make passes in different shadings (purple and orange in the thread).

Another tip I find helpful is to mark your pad with three little marks so you can determine if the pad is still spinning or you have too much pressure and the pad has stopped. I use the Megs 7 inch softbuff 2 pads so there is area on the white part on the top of the pad to place three little slashes to help determine if the pad is spinning. Hope this helps.
