  • 1-Step Battle: D151 vs. D301

When Meguiar's launched its most aggressive all in one product/ cleaner wax, D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream, it quickly became my favorite 1-step liquid. I really liked its ability to successfully chalenge paint correction jobs. With the introduction of DA Microfiber Correction System D151 faces competition - D301 Finishing Wax which is also a cleaner wax. Let's see how they behave on the same paint side by side.

I have a perfect candidate - Jet Black BMW non metallic paint. It just shows everything. Plus after snowy and cold winter there must be some below surface problems.

To give the car paint a nice fresh start after washing the hood with Next Car Wash will give it a detailing clay clean up with M34 Final Inspection as a lubricant.

Did somebody clay this hood last night? It looks pretty good. The clay barely picked up any contaminants.

    The hood's ready for testing.
Two liquids: D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream and D301 Finishing Wax.
Four pads: 8207 Soft Buff 7" Yellow Polishing Pad, 9207 Soft Buff 7" Black Finishing Pad, 5" Microfiber Cutting Disk, 5" Microfiber Finishing Disk.

Nice swirls and small scratches, nothing major but enough to perform some correction tests.

5" Cutting Disk primed with D301 and ready to go on the hood's paint.

It was a nice surprise to see no dust while working with Finishing Wax. I initially set the speed on G110v2 to 3 but after couple passes I increased it to 3.5 and got much better buffing feeling. I used slow arm speed (about 1.5"/ second) and used medium down pressure for first 3 passes followed by another 3 passes with light pressure and faster arm speed (about 2"/ second).
I repeated the same process with 5" Finishing Disk and lowered the speed to 3. It work very well.
On the right side of the hood I tested D151. First I used it with yellow polishing pad on speed 4 making 6 passes: first 3 with medium pressure followed by another 3 with light pressure. Slow arm speed (1.5"/ second) for first 3 passes and faster (2"/ second) for last 3 passes. Later I made another 6 passes on the lower part of the hood with black finishing pad slowing down DA polisher to speed 3.

    Final results:
D151 and yellow polishing pad offer the most correction power. PRC can really cut with slow arm speed and down pressure. There was very small finish difference between using D301 with cutting and finishing microfiber disks. That's what I noticed on this type of paint. Small swirls and scratches were removed but deeper problems remained. Maybe additional 2-3 passes would further improve them. D151 used with black finishing pad basically just offers polishing option. The combo is not aggressive enough (used with DA polisher) to produce enough cut for defect removal. Only very small improvement was noticed besides gloss restoration.
I think that D301 Finishing Wax with microfiber cutting disk doesn't offer much increased correction ability comparing to microfiber finishing disk. It's better to stay in Meguiar's recommended zone: D301 with finishing disks.

How well did the D151 with the polishing pad finish on this paint?

If I understand your post correctly 151 with polishing pad performed better than the MF DA as an AIO... doesn't surprise me as 301 was probably formulated with more oils and polish than SMAT

About 90% defect removal after 6 passes with 8207 yellow polishing pad/ G110v2 speed 4.

You're correct, more defect removal ability. But there's no dust working with D301 at all. Also microfiber pads feel totally different than foam pads.

Nice test, Greg, thanks for doing this and documenting it so fully!

We would expect D151/W8207 to provide more cut than D301/DMF5 as D151 really is designed to be an all-in-one that's even compatible with a wool pad on a rotary buffer. D301 is a finishing wax designed just to remove any light hazing created by D300/DMC5 while adding a degree of gloss and protection.

In the most direct comparison it would be interesting to see D301/DMF5 vs D151/W9207 - essentially using both as a light cleaner wax - and see how they compare. You'd most likely see no discernible difference in the final outcome, though D301 would present the easiest wipe off and longer lasting protection, plus higher gloss levels. But defect removal? Probably a wash, depending on the paint.

But D300/DMF5 vs D151/W8207? Hands down, D300/DMF5 should be the easy winner with regard to defect removal.

                Thanks for kind words, Mike.

I wanted to give every liquid/ pad combination the same chance therefore I only performed three passes with medium pressure/ slow arm speed and three passes with light pressure/ faster arm speed.

With more down pressure D151/ 8207 would just finish 100% defect free on those minor problems.

I did a little testing yesterday as well with D300/ 5" cutting disk and D151/ 8207 have no chance with that combo at all (cut wise). Pics will follow.

Is it worth getting the D301 and Finishing Disc since there is little to no correction? Am I better off just getting D300 and the Cutting Disc then apply UW with the Finishing Foam Soft Buff 2.0 pad?

Depends what you are working on really.

If the Cutting disc and D300 left some marring, the Ult Wax and finishing pad may not remove it. At that point, a cleaner/polish would be needed before the wax, at least if going for perfect results.

Also isn't "perfect" depend on the person looking at it? I think most people will not notice the micro marring....I maybe wrong.

I am sure most people wouldnt notice...

My car being a daily driver, outside a lot, I have to say too bad for some things, even though I see them.

But thats the only concern... if you really wanted perfect, and didnt have the 301 (or another cleaner/wax), you'll have made it a 3 step process instead of 2 step, to remove the marring and wax. Nothing right or wrong about it, just what options you have with the products on hand.

Glad I checked the site this morning. I just washed my silver 323ci yesterday, and determined that it needed a little more than just #21, but not the full DA approach. I was lying in bed last night trying to decide between 151 and 301 (a true sign of Car Crazy, I'm sure) Looks like it will be the 151 for that extra cleaning. Maybe the next time my black 9-5 needs polishing I'll do a comparo on it.

                            Thanks for the great write-up.
