When Meguiar's launched its most aggressive all in one product/ cleaner wax, D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream, it quickly became my favorite 1-step liquid. I really liked its ability to successfully chalenge paint correction jobs. With the introduction of DA Microfiber Correction System D151 faces competition - D301 Finishing Wax which is also a cleaner wax. Let's see how they behave on the same paint side by side.
I have a perfect candidate - Jet Black BMW non metallic paint. It just shows everything. Plus after snowy and cold winter there must be some below surface problems.
To give the car paint a nice fresh start after washing the hood with Next Car Wash will give it a detailing clay clean up with M34 Final Inspection as a lubricant.
Did somebody clay this hood last night? It looks pretty good. The clay barely picked up any contaminants.
The hood's ready for testing.
Two liquids: D151 Paint Reconditioning Cream and D301 Finishing Wax.
Four pads: 8207 Soft Buff 7" Yellow Polishing Pad, 9207 Soft Buff 7" Black Finishing Pad, 5" Microfiber Cutting Disk, 5" Microfiber Finishing Disk.
Nice swirls and small scratches, nothing major but enough to perform some correction tests.
5" Cutting Disk primed with D301 and ready to go on the hood's paint.
It was a nice surprise to see no dust while working with Finishing Wax. I initially set the speed on G110v2 to 3 but after couple passes I increased it to 3.5 and got much better buffing feeling. I used slow arm speed (about 1.5"/ second) and used medium down pressure for first 3 passes followed by another 3 passes with light pressure and faster arm speed (about 2"/ second).
I repeated the same process with 5" Finishing Disk and lowered the speed to 3. It work very well.
On the right side of the hood I tested D151. First I used it with yellow polishing pad on speed 4 making 6 passes: first 3 with medium pressure followed by another 3 with light pressure. Slow arm speed (1.5"/ second) for first 3 passes and faster (2"/ second) for last 3 passes. Later I made another 6 passes on the lower part of the hood with black finishing pad slowing down DA polisher to speed 3.
Final results:
D151 and yellow polishing pad offer the most correction power. PRC can really cut with slow arm speed and down pressure. There was very small finish difference between using D301 with cutting and finishing microfiber disks. That's what I noticed on this type of paint. Small swirls and scratches were removed but deeper problems remained. Maybe additional 2-3 passes would further improve them. D151 used with black finishing pad basically just offers polishing option. The combo is not aggressive enough (used with DA polisher) to produce enough cut for defect removal. Only very small improvement was noticed besides gloss restoration.
I think that D301 Finishing Wax with microfiber cutting disk doesn't offer much increased correction ability comparing to microfiber finishing disk. It's better to stay in Meguiar's recommended zone: D301 with finishing disks.
