  • Barrett-Jackson Auctions, West Palm Beach, FL

Today was day one of three for the Barrett-Jackson Auctions in West Palm Beach, FL and we're sure a lot of you have been watching this on Speed Channel (if you aren't, you should!).

Once again Meguiar's is front and center, right at the pre-staging area where we're wiping down all the cars before they enter the auction pavilion. As always there are plenty of cool cars from all aspects of the collector hobby.

This is where we hang out all day, talking to customers and helping them with paint issues.

And the cars really do run the gamut.

    Classics:

    Muscle Cars:

    Resto-Mods:

Dirt track racers (look at the chassis offset on this thing!)

    Fins!!! Always fins!!

    Boats:

    Street Rods:

Amphicars (the world record price for an Amphicar was at a Barrett-Jackson event a few years ago):

    Limited production stainless steel gullwings:

Gullwings that look like the real deal but aren't (yes, this is a recreation, not a real Mercedes 300SL):

    Classic British Sports Cars:

4 seater station wagon dragsters (OK, there was only 1 car like this, not multiples!)

Seriously, how would you like to be a passenger in the back of this thing??!!

    Classic American Luxury:

And full customs - and this truck was stunning all around:

Look at this close up of the paint on that truck - it's incredible!

Of course, if you've got cool cars you need some cool stuff in your garage to go along with them, and the folks at Barrett-Jackson can hook you up with that, too.

OK, back to work wiping down every single car that crosses the block!!

And when yours truly isn't out taking pictures for your enjoyment, I'm doing DA buffer demos for the attendees of the event.

Drawing a nice crowd for each of 4 demos each day.

Incidentally, the demo car we're using is a non metallic black 2011 Roush Stage 2 Mustang 5.0 convertible. But since the paint was in fairly good shape, and you need pretty messed up paint to do a proper demo on, we took some old school rubbing compound to the hood in order to, um, detract from the appearance. And to correct it, we used Ultimate Compound/W8207, Ultimate Polish/W9207, Ultimate Liquid Wax/W9207. The results are pretty impressive, don't you think?

By the way, that before/after image was shot on my Blackberry, not the Canon DSLR, which explains the smaller size. And the pattern in the "after" side is the reflection of the tent supports overhead, plus a bit of flare off the bright sun on the "before" side.

OK, that's it for today, we'll have more from the event tomorrow, so check back in (roughly) 24 hours.

It's a super busy week for you, Mike, but you get a close encounter with amazing rides.

Rubbing compound as a demo preparation? I saw it at Detail Fest.

Pix from day two - such a broad selection of cars here, from what look like just nice used cars to very unusual customs, hot rods, and anything you can imagine (and maybe a couple of things you can't).

There seemed to be a lot of Buick GS iterations here this year.

Emerson Fittipaldi's old Indy car is up for grabs!

These two almost look like they're ready to drag race!

          A beautiful engine....

....for a darn near flawless Ferrari Daytona.

          This is far from stock!

This is even further from stock!!

23 windows should be enough, right?

One of my personal all time favorites.

So what do you think this blown engine is hauling around?

          Yep, that's a Caddy Fleetwood.

But not just any Fleetwood - it's a full on limo.

With the longest side pipes you've ever seen!!

          Mopar muscle!

Are two together considered an 884????

          Fins to the absolute max.

Here's a way to get a big jump on starting a car collection.

Of course, we had a full schedule of DA buffer demos today, and every day.

And of course, the demos were always highly successful.

Barrett-Jackson's photographer came through and shot almost an entire demo! They were kind enough to send them to us, so we decided to share them with you.

Great event. The rides are getting sweeter and sweeter.

Is there a PC polisher in your hand, Mike?

Re: Barrett-Jackson Auctions, West Palm Beach, FL

OK, day 3 of this 3 day event is winding down. Hot and humid weather did not keep the crowds away today, that's for sure - the place was packed!!!

So there's this Pantera with crazy chameleon paint that was about as well done as you'll ever see (assuming you like this sort of thing!). The effect is strange, but a bit entertaining.

Is the fender purple and the hood gold.......

..... or is it the other way around?

Does the quarter panel fade out to purple.......

.....or does it fade out to gold?

                  Classic Ford instrument cluster.

                  Mustang Mach 1 rocker panel.

                  The Screamin' Chicken!!

Are these the original 20" DUBS? Yes, they are 20" wheels!

A modern take on the classic Hemi 'Cuda

Told you the place was packed today!

Justin Bell, part of SPEED's team covering the event.

You didn't have to be inside the hall to see the auction as this big screen showed it all.

Our rig was jumping all day long.

Ferrari 512 BBi - the owner said the reserve was "under $100,000" but there were a lot of paint issues on this car and it just didn't sound like a 12 cylinder Ferrari should. Amazing car, but the cost to put it right is scary.

This transparent fixed roof Cadillac was built for the Queen of England to use when visiting the US so that fans and admirers could still see her clearing if it was raining and she could ride in an open car.

This black and gold DeSoto Adventurer was virtually flawless.

Great turnout for the demos today too, what with our rig being right of front of the staging lanes and the crowd being pretty huge!

We would take some old school rubbing compound and inflict all kinds of horrible swirls and haze to the paint, then correct a section for the demo, then swirl it up again with the rubbing compound, and repeat. At the end of it all we obviously couldn't give the car back to the fine folks at Roush with the hood all messed up, so we did a quick DA/W8207/Ultimate Compound/ColorX on the hood. The whole car then a quick once over with ColorX. We like to return cars in better shape than when they came to us on loan.

We close with a car we've shown you already, but it is absolutely stunning in every way. Lloyd Gillespie did just an amazing job on this Jaguar XK150, and it has won Best Finish at Amelia Island (and that is quite an accomplishment!) along with numerous other awards. Besides, it just looks soooo good in our booth

                      Awesome cars and pics Mike!

You should make that one of you and the UP your avatar haha

I once put swirls in my paint just to see what it looked like.

                      I don't always detail cars, but when I do, I prefer Meguiar's.
                      Remove swirls my friends.
