  • Best Megs Product on exterior plastic"Chrome effect "

    Hi guys,

I have a car to detail in a few weeks it has a lot of the fake chrome Window surrounds/ front grill/ large bumper inserts etc.... All are badly swirled.

I have found. Clay it first then use Swirl X with a d/a on a black megs pad gives great results. Then top it with a sealant.

What megs product do use or suggest?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Rappy

I've found that the better paint sealants are best solution on plastic chrome surfaces. NXT, Ultimate, whatever you have handy will work just fine. Just stay away from any abrasive products, as the chrome scratches very easily.

            Thanks Bill.

What do use to remove the scratches? I always use a sealant after to seal.

Odd that nobody else has responded to this - hey, I was at Barrett-Jackson in Florida so I have an alibi!

So what you're saying is that these chromed plastic bits actually respond quite well to just SwirlX on a finishing pad and you can remove fine scratches with just that? That's a bit surprising, really, and a good indicator as to just how delicate that material can be since your approach is quite mild. We're inclined to say that if this is working well for you, stick with it, as it's a gentle approach that seems to get the job done. No need to get any more aggressive if you don't need to.

I agree Michael. I would of thought this was common problem on most cars and I would of got lots of replies.

Or people pointing me in the direction of another great Megs product!!.

The process I mentioned was when I had some very fine scratches on my 3 yr old VW. I tried DC01 this did not touch it. So I thought I would try swirl X on a black Megs pad and it worked a treat I guess the fillers helped!!. I topped this with NXT 2.0 wax and I was more than happy.

The car I will be working on is a different story. Its a 14 yr old Jag that is badly swirled and scratched and has very dull paint. That includes the chrome trim. I have many Megs products from the most aggresive down to vey mild.

I find on exhaust trims I use Autosol first with super fine wire wool. Then use Megs NXT metal polish to maintain.

If this does not respond well I may wet sand the trim with Megs unit grit 3000.

                Guys please help?

                Rappy.

I have the strips on my car. When I bought it the dealer had been kind enough to add the DISO option, and this included the strips. Lucky me!

I was a little unsure as to what to use as they can be sensitive little things at the best of times.

I started with M205 on a yellow Meguiars polishing pad with my DA. Light pressure to begin, and just a small section. Didn't harm it, but didn't really fix it except to heighten the gloss factor by 1000%.

I moved up to M105 with the yellow Meguiars polishing pad, and again began with a small test section (and I had nothing to lose- it was my car, and they looked terrible how they were). It was a noticeable improvement, swirls gone. In the end the strips loved the M105/DA combo, and could really take some pressure, although not a lot of pressure was really required. Follow up with M205, (polishing or finishing pad) to brighten them superbly. Wax them to finish.

I'd say to test the particular ones you are encountering as I am sure quality and sensitivity varies. If they are worse than the panel surrounding/below them, tape the panel off while you're working the strip to keep it all in a controlled area.

                  Good luck!
